Office Chair Spray Coating

Admin October 08, 2026

Office chair spray coating is the process of using a high-pressure spray gun to evenly spray paint onto the surface to form a coating, involving aspects such as techniques, paint selection, process optimization, and DIY modifications.

Characteristics of Spray Coating Techniques

High-pressure spray coating uniformly atomizes the paint, enabling the coating to cover every corner of the office chair, avoiding brush or roller marks, and offering high efficiency, making it suitable for large-scale production. Electrostatic spray coating technology reduces material waste by making paint particles charged and actively adhering to the substrate, further enhancing coating uniformity.

Types of Paint and Selection Criteria

  • Water-based paint: Using water as the solvent, it has low VOC content, is environmentally friendly, and friendly to the human body. Its wear resistance, scratch resistance, and yellowing resistance continue to improve, meeting long-term usage requirements and becoming the mainstream choice in the modern furniture industry.
  • Special-function paint: Such as antibacterial paint (suitable for medical or public places) and fire-resistant paint (used in scenarios with high fire safety requirements), adding practical value to office chairs.
  • Baked paint and ordinary spray coating: Baked paint requires high-temperature baking (180โ„ƒ-250โ„ƒ) to form a dense mesh structure with strong adhesion, far superior scratch and corrosion resistance compared to ordinary spray coating, suitable for high-frequency contact steel frame components; however, it requires pre-treatments like pickling and phosphating, has high energy consumption, and a long cycle. Ordinary spray coating (such as electrostatic powder coating) relies on physical drying or low-temperature baking, with lower costs but slightly weaker performance.

Key Steps in the Process Flow

  1. Substrate pretreatment: Remove surface impurities through sanding, dust removal, and degreasing. Metal components require phosphating treatment to form a microporous structure, enhancing paint adhesion.
  2. Paint selection and blending: Match the paint according to the usage scenario (e.g., indoor/outdoor) and substrate type (wood, metal, plastic). For example, children's office chairs require environmentally friendly paint without heavy metal additives.
  3. Spray coating method optimization: Automated equipment controls spray gun pressure, paint flow rate, and spray speed to achieve a coating thickness uniformity error of less than 5%.
  4. Curing and testing: After the coating cures under specific temperature and humidity conditions, it needs to be tested for performance using a film thickness gauge and adhesion tester to ensure compliance with wear and corrosion resistance standards.

DIY Modification Precautions

If an office chair is rusty, it can be refurbished with water-based paint:

  • First, use a steel wool pad to sand the rusty areas until the surface is smooth, and lay down paper to protect the floor.
  • Pour the water-based paint into a container, dip a brush into it, and apply thin coats, allowing them to dry thoroughly between applications, avoiding paint drips.
  • Control the amount used; 500 grams of water-based paint can cover 3-4 chairs. This method is suitable for iron furniture, but thorough sanding is necessary to enhance adhesion.
