Office Chair Sponge Synthesis

Admin October 13, 2026

The use of recycled sponge exists in the synthesis of office chair sponges. Recycled sponge is made by recycling sponge waste and re-bonding it with glue, resulting in inconsistent quality issues.

Cost and Use of Recycled Sponge: The average cost of recycled sponge is about half that of virgin sponge, making it a favorite among some seat manufacturers due to this significant cost advantage. During the production of office chairs, to reduce costs, some manufacturers choose to use recycled sponge as a filling material.

Disguise Tactics of Recycled Sponge: Due to issues such as rough texture and hard feel of recycled sponge, some manufacturers adopt disguise tactics. They cover a thin layer of virgin sponge on the surface or both sides of the recycled sponge, making it difficult for consumers to detect the use of recycled sponge inside when they open the cushion to inspect the surface.

Quality Issues of Recycled Sponge: The quality issues of recycled sponge cannot be ignored. Since it is made by bonding sponge waste with glue, it may contain yellow and white hard lumps and debris from hardened glue, as well as other impurities. These impurities not only affect the comfort of office chairs but may also pose potential threats to human health. Additionally, recycled sponge has poor elasticity and support, and it generally starts to collapse after more than six months of use, seriously affecting the service life of office chairs.

Environmental and Safety Concerns of Recycled Sponge: There are also controversies regarding the environmental and safety aspects of recycled sponge. Although some merchants refer to recycled sponge as virgin-blended sponge and provide a qualified formaldehyde content "Recycled Sponge Test Report", some sales personnel from manufacturers also state that their recycled sponge "definitely fails the formaldehyde test". This indicates that there may be a risk of excessive formaldehyde content in recycled sponge, posing a threat to human health.
