Office Chair Sponge Sagging
Office chair sponge sagging can be resolved through minor repairs or replacement, depending on the degree of sagging.

Self-repair methods for minor sagging
Patting and Kneading:
Gently pat or knead the sagging area with your hands to stimulate the internal filler (such as sponge) fibers to fluff up again, restoring some elasticity. This method is suitable for local deformations caused by long-term static pressure but cannot repair permanent damage caused by material aging.Adding Support:
Place a flat, hard material (such as a wooden board, cardboard, or plastic sheet) under the seat cushion to distribute pressure and alleviate the feeling of sagging. Ensure that the support material matches the size of the seat cushion to prevent the edges from lifting and causing an unstable sitting posture.Air Drying and Ventilation:
If the sagging is caused by moisture (such as a humid environment or liquid infiltration), move the chair to a well-ventilated area to dry naturally, avoiding direct sunlight to prevent the sponge from becoming brittle. This method can restore volume shrinkage caused by moisture but is ineffective for sagging due to aging.Re-filling:
Those with strong hands-on skills can open the outer fabric of the seat cushion and replace it with high-density sponge or professional filler material (such as polyurethane foam). Ensure that the new material has uniform density and the same thickness as the original cushion. After sewing, check for flatness.
Replacement recommendations for severe sagging
If the sagging is accompanied by the following conditions, the seat cushion or the entire chair needs to be replaced:
- When sitting, there is a noticeable "leg-catching" sensation, and the support force is completely lost;
- The sponge shows irreversible sagging deformation (such as a rebound time exceeding 5 seconds);
- The chair has been in use for over 3 years, and other components (such as the gas lift or five-star base) may be aging.
When replacing, pay attention to sponge parameters:
- Density: Prioritize high-density sponge with a density of 25-35KG/Mยณ or higher, which offers strong support and high durability;
- Thickness: Choose based on body weightโ6-8cm for those under 50kg, 8-10cm for those between 50-75kg, and 10-12cm for those over 75kg;
- Hardness: Medium hardness (rebound time of 3-5 seconds) balances comfort and support.
Daily preventive measures
- Avoid heavy users continuously pressing on the same area for long periods;
- Maintain an upright sitting posture during long periods of sitting to reduce uneven force distribution caused by leaning on one side;
- Regularly check the supporting structure at the bottom of the chair (such as casters and gas lift) for damage;
- Temporary solution: Use a 3-5cm thick memory foam or gel seat cushion (preferably one with a hollow design in the middle), paired with a lumbar support pillow, and get up and move every 30 minutes.
