Office Chair Sponge Replacement

Admin October 11, 2026

The replacement of the sponge in an office chair can be carried out according to the following steps. It is necessary to prepare tools and materials in advance and pay attention to safety:

I. Tool and Material Preparation

  1. Tools: Allen wrenches (for removing screws connecting the seat cushion and the base), screwdrivers (for removing plastic baffles), wrenches or sockets (for handling larger screws), pliers (for removing small wire hooks), rubber mallets (for separating components without scratching), sharp scissors (for cutting the sponge), heavy-duty staplers for securing leather covers (or leather-specific glue, thick needles and thread), and work gloves.
  2. Materials:
    • New Sponge: Accurately measure the dimensions of the old sponge (length, width, and thickness, taking the average of multiple measurements). Choose high-density sponge (with a density of 25 - 35KG/Mยณ or higher, suitable for computer chair seat cushions, providing strong support and delaying sagging; memory foam conforms to the body and reduces pressure but is more expensive); select the thickness based on body weight: for those under 50kg, choose 6 - 8cm; for those between 50 - 75kg, choose 8 - 10cm; and for those over 75kg, choose 10 - 12cm.
    • Purchase Channels: E-commerce platforms (such as 1688 and Taobao, where you can search for 'high-density sponge' or 'office furniture sponge', with customization options available; JD.com and Taobao's 'office swivel chair accessories' sections offer universal seat cushions); if you know the brand and model, you can contact the original manufacturer's customer service for accessory information.

II. Safety Precautions

  1. Before operation, adjust the chair's gas lift to the lowest position or fully deflate it, and place it upside down on a soft carpet or cardboard to prevent scratching the floor and the chair body.
  2. For electrically adjustable models, disconnect the power cord connector at the bottom of the seat to avoid electric shock or damage to the circuit.

III. Detailed Steps

  1. Safe Inversion and Base Separation: Place the chair upside down on a soft-padded floor, and use an Allen wrench to unscrew the four fixing screws connecting the seat cushion to the five-star foot or the chassis, separating the seat cushion from the base.
  2. Dismantling the Seat Cushion Shell: Observe the edge of the seat cushion, and use a screwdriver to remove the screws securing the U-shaped iron bar or plastic baffle (for some models, you may need to first remove the large screw below the backrest adjustment lever and lay down the backrest).
  3. Removing the Old Sponge: Carefully take out the old sponge after opening the shell.
  4. Installing the New Sponge: Place the new sponge into the shell according to the dimensions, and secure the leather cover with a heavy-duty stapler (or glue and thick needles and thread).
  5. Reassembling the Seat Cushion Shell: Refasten the U-shaped iron bar or plastic baffle, and wrap the fabric and sponge properly.
  6. Installing the Seat Cushion and the Base: Align the seat cushion with the base, and tighten the four fixing screws with an Allen wrench.

IV. Dismantling Methods for Different Fixing Structures

  1. Screw-Fixed Models: Place the chair upside down or on its side, and use the corresponding screwdriver to unscrew the screws connecting the seat to the base and the backrest to the seat in a counterclockwise direction. Store the screws separately and then separate the components.
  2. Snap-Fit Models: Reach into the gap between the seat cushion and the base to feel for the position of the snaps. First, pull the front end of the seat cushion to release the snaps, and then push the entire cushion backward to remove it; when dismantling the backrest, push it downward from the top and pull the upper edge outward, applying even force to avoid breaking the snaps.
