Office Chair Sponge Repair

Admin October 13, 2026

Office chair sponge repair can be achieved through methods such as physical restoration, auxiliary support, and material replacement, with specific operations selected based on the degree of collapse and available tools.

1. Physical Restoration Method

Suitable for mild collapse or local deformation, this method revives the elasticity of sponge fibers through physical means.

  1. Sunning and Patting: Remove the sponge cushion and place it in a well-ventilated, dry area for 2-3 hours (avoid direct sunlight). Gently pat the surface with a wooden stick or hand, using air circulation to promote fiber rebound and alleviate flattening.
  2. Steam Softening: Use a garment steamer or steam cleaner to evenly spray steam onto the sponge from a distance of 20-30 centimeters. After softening the fibers, gently press and stretch them, allowing them to regain fluffiness upon cooling. This method is suitable for minor local collapses, but be cautious to control the amount of steam to avoid excessive softening.

2. Auxiliary Support Method

This method extends the lifespan of the sponge by adding external support to disperse pressure.

  1. Adding Auxiliary Layers: Place a 1-2 cm thick layer of thin memory foam or high-density fiberboard beneath the sponge cushion to disperse body pressure. For local collapses, sew small pieces of shredded sponge or old clothing into the flattened area to increase thickness.
  2. Replacing Elastic Bands: If the sponge cushion is secured within a chair cover, check if the elastic bands have aged and lost elasticity. After removing the old bands, sew on wide (3-5 cm) high-elastic bands, pulling them tight to prevent sponge displacement.

3. Material Replacement Method

This method is suitable for severe collapses or when repair results are unsatisfactory, requiring replacement of the core material.

  1. Replacing with High-Density Sponge: Measure the dimensions of the old sponge (it is recommended to take multiple measurements and average them), and select a high-density sponge with a density of โ‰ฅ25-35KG/Mยณ (โ‰ฅ35KG/Mยณ is recommended for those who sit for long periods). Choose the thickness based on body weight: 6-8 cm for those under 50 kg, 8-10 cm for those between 50-75 kg, and 10-12 cm for those over 75 kg. Purchase channels include e-commerce platforms or contacting the original manufacturer's customer service.
  2. Hybrid Filling Upgrade: Shred the old sponge and mix it with new sponge pieces and down cotton in a ratio of 1:2:1. Place the mixture in a breathable cloth bag and then insert it into the chair cover. This method combines elasticity with fluffiness and is more cost-effective.

4. Daily Maintenance Suggestions

  1. Avoid sitting in the same position for extended periods. Stand up and move around every hour, gently patting the sponge cushion to adjust pressure points.
  2. Regularly flip the sponge cushion (every 3-6 months) and spot clean it with a neutral detergent. Avoid machine washing and wringing to prevent deformation.

Precautions: Before operating, ensure that the chair's gas lift is at its lowest position or fully deflated, and place it upside down on a soft surface to prevent scratches. If the collapse is severe or self-repair is difficult, it is recommended to contact professional repair services.
