Office Chair Sponge Damage
Admin October 11, 2026
Repair methods for office chair sponge damage can be selected according to the degree of damage, as follows:

Slight Depression
If the sponge is only slightly collapsed and soft locally without any damage, there are two repair methods. First, turn the cushion over and vigorously pat its surface several times to encourage the internal filling material to redistribute evenly. Most small-scale depressions can be restored to flatness in this way. Second, lift the cushion cover and add a small amount of the same type of filling material to the depressed area. For example, when the sponge in a sofa cushion is locally compressed, a small piece of well-fitting high-elastic sponge can be cut and added.
Sponge Tearing
- Use Repair Glue: Purchase specialized sponge repair glue and apply it evenly to the torn area. Gently press to make it adhere well. After the glue dries and solidifies, it can repair the torn gap to a certain extent and enhance the overall integrity of the sponge.
- Fill with Small Pieces of Sponge: Find a small piece of sponge with a similar material to that of the chair's sponge, cut it into an appropriate shape, and glue it to the torn area to fill and reinforce it.
- Cover with Fabric Patch: If the surface of the chair is made of fabric, cut a slightly larger fabric patch and sew it with a needle and thread onto the corresponding fabric area above the torn sponge. This can not only cover the tear but also prevent it from expanding further.
Severe Damage (such as the sponge being completely compressed and hardened or torn)
- Prepare Tools and Materials: You need to prepare basic disassembly tools such as an Allen wrench, screwdrivers, wrenches or sockets, pliers, and a rubber mallet. Accurately measure the length, width, and thickness of the old sponge (it is recommended to take multiple measurements and calculate the average). Select a new sponge with appropriate parameters. For computer chair cushions, it is recommended to use high-density sponge with a density of 25 - 35KG/Mยณ or higher. The thickness can be selected according to your own weight. For those with a light weight (below 50kg), 6 - 8cm can be chosen; for those with a medium weight (50 - 75kg), 8 - 10cm is suitable; and for those with a heavy weight (above 75kg), it is recommended to choose 10 - 12cm.
- Replacement Steps: First, turn the computer chair upside down on a floor covered with a soft pad. Locate the four fixing screws that connect the seat cushion to the five-star foot or the base (usually located at the bottom of the seat cushion). Use an Allen wrench to unscrew all of them to completely separate the seat cushion part from the base. After removing the seat cushion, observe its edges. Usually, there is a circle of U-shaped iron bars or plastic baffles fixed with screws, which wrap the cushion fabric and sponge inside the shell. Use screwdrivers and other tools to unscrew the screws on these fixing iron bars or baffles one by one. For some models of chairs, you may need to first unscrew the large screw below the backrest adjustment lever and lay the backrest down to operate more conveniently. After opening the seat cushion shell, take out the old sponge, cut a high-elastic sponge of an appropriate size (1 - 2cm larger than the original sponge to ensure a good fit), fix it, and then put it back into the cushion cover.
