Office Chair Sponge Crumbling
Admin October 19, 2026
The crumbling of sponge in office chairs can be caused by material aging, environmental factors, improper use and cleaning, exceeding the service life, or product quality issues. Minor crumbling can be repaired, while severe cases require replacement.

Causes of Crumbling
- Material Aging: Materials such as latex and sponge can undergo oxidation reactions when used or stored improperly for a long time, leading to brittleness and decomposition, and ultimately resulting in crumbling.
- Environmental Factors: Direct sunlight (ultraviolet rays), high temperatures, and humid environments can accelerate the aging process of sponge, making it more prone to crumbling. For example, placing an office chair near a window for a long time, with prolonged exposure to sunlight, can easily damage the sponge.
- Improper Use and Cleaning: Long-term exposure to moisture and oils, or frequent disinfection with hot water and strong cleaning agents, can damage the structure of the sponge and cause crumbling. For instance, cleaning the sponge of an office chair with a strong alkaline cleaning agent may corrode its surface and make it fragile.
- Exceeding the Service Life: Any sponge has a certain service life. After exceeding its lifespan, the molecular structure will naturally decompose, leading to crumbling.
- Poor Product Quality: Low-quality sponge has uneven pores and low density, making it more prone to fragmentation and crumbling. If the seat cushion of an office chair is made by mixing scraps with inferior glue, it will also crumble easily upon slight contact.
Handling Methods
- Minor Crumbling Repair: If the crumbling is minor, first assess the value of the item. If it is worth repairing, for large items with local crumbling and small damage range, repair can be attempted. Before operation, thoroughly clean and dry the damaged area, carefully remove all loose debris, then use a special repair adhesive, evenly apply it to the damaged area and press it firmly, and let it cure for at least 24 hours before use.
- Severe Crumbling Replacement: If the sponge is significantly discolored, blackened, feels sticky to the touch, crumbles in large quantities when squeezed, has a damaged structure, produces an irremovable odor, and has severely decreased support leading to collapse, the sponge or the entire seat cushion should be replaced in a timely manner.
