Collapse of Sponge in Office Chairs

Admin October 17, 2026

Different measures can be taken to address the collapse of the sponge in office chairs depending on the degree of collapse.

Mild collapse (local sagging of less than 1 centimeter):

  1. Patting and kneading: Gently pat or knead the collapsed area to promote the recovery of the internal filling material, improving local sagging.
  2. Adjusting the mesh: If it is a mesh cushion, locate the fixing straps at the bottom and restore the mesh's support by tightening the screws or re-tensioning the straps.
  3. Adding support: Place a wooden board or cardboard under the cushion to enhance overall support and alleviate the feeling of collapse.
  4. Air-drying and ventilation: If the collapse is due to moisture deformation, move the chair to a well-ventilated area for air-drying (avoid direct sunlight) to help the material regain its shape.
  5. Re-filling: Users with strong hands-on skills can open the outer fabric, supplement the original filling material with professional filling material or new sponge, and then re-seal it.

Severe collapse:

  1. Replacing the sponge:
    • Tools and materials: Prepare tools such as an Allen wrench and screwdriver; measure the size of the old sponge and choose a high-density sponge (density of 25-35KG/Mยณ or higher), with thickness selected according to body weight (6-8cm for those under 50kg, 8-10cm for those between 50-75kg, and 10-12cm for those over 75kg). Custom orders or purchase of universal parts can be made through e-commerce platforms.
    • Operation steps:
      • Turn the chair upside down, unscrew the fixing screws between the cushion and the base, and separate the cushion.
      • Remove the fixing iron bars or baffles on the cushion shell and take out the old sponge.
      • Place the new sponge, install the shell in reverse order, and finally reconnect the cushion to the base and tighten the screws.
  2. Replacing the cushion or the entire chair: If the collapse causes 'leg-pocketing', complete loss of support, or if the repair cost exceeds 50% of the original chair price, or if the chair has been used for more than 3 years and other components are aging, or if the cushion frame is damaged, it is recommended to directly replace the cushion or the entire chair.

Daily prevention: Maintain a correct sitting posture, sit fully on the chair, and place a cushion behind the waist; get up and move for 2 minutes every 30 minutes; do hip bridge exercises after work to strengthen the gluteal muscles and reduce pressure on the buttocks.
