Spinal Twist on Office Chair

Admin October 12, 2026

Exercise caution when performing spinal twists on an office chair, as improper twisting can cause damage to the lumbar spine. However, there are also some spinal twist exercises suitable for the office environment.

The Dangers of Improper Twisting

When turning around on an office chair to talk to a colleague, the lumbar spine undergoes a twist. This seemingly ordinary action leaves โ€œbiological marksโ€ on the collagen fibers between the lumbar intervertebral discs. This is the body's way of recording and adapting to movement habits. However, if such improper twisting is carried out frequently over a long period, it may cause cumulative damage to the lumbar intervertebral discs, affecting the normal physiological structure and function of the lumbar spine and increasing the risk of lumbar spine diseases, such as lumbar disc herniation.

Spinal Twist Exercises Suitable for the Office

  • Chair Back Stretch and Twist: Sit at your workstation and turn to one side to hold onto the chair back. At this point, you can clearly feel the stretch in your chest and back. Maintain this position for 30 seconds while taking deep breaths to allow your body to fully relax and stretch. Then, change angles and perform the same action on the other side. This method can to some extent relieve spinal tension and enhance spinal flexibility.
  • Seated Twist Posture: First, assume a seated position. Bring your left foot close to your hip and place your right foot on the front of your lower leg or the outer side of your thigh. Support your body with your right hand behind you and grasp the outer side of your right foot with your left hand. As you inhale, straighten your right leg; as you exhale, rotate your chest to the right. During this process, make sure both buttocks remain on the floor and your knees are slightly bent. The rotation should start from the thoracic spine segment. If your flexibility is limited, you can choose to lower your foot and hug your knee before rotating. This movement can stretch the entire spine, open up the chest, and at the same time stretch the lower back and the outer side of the buttocks, helping to improve spinal flexibility and body posture.

When performing these spinal twist exercises, pay attention to the range and intensity of the movements to avoid excessive twisting that could cause injury. If you experience pain or discomfort during the exercises, stop immediately and seek advice from a professional.
