Office Chair Specifications

Admin October 08, 2026

The specifications for office chairs vary depending on different scenarios and requirements, primarily divided into two categories of standards for central administrative institutions and reading venues, as detailed below:

Specifications for Central Administrative Institutions
According to the "Guidelines for Specifications and Performance of General Office Furniture in Central Administrative Institutions" issued by the National Government Offices Administration, the specifications for office chairs cover three aspects: dimensions, performance, and configuration standards.

  1. Dimensional Requirements: The guidelines recommend standards for the appearance and main dimensions of general office chairs, aiming to promote large-scale production and standardized procurement. Unified dimensional standards help enhance the versatility of office furniture, reduce procurement costs, and ensure that office chairs of different brands and models are compatible and well-suited within office spaces.
  2. Performance Indicators: The guidelines specify surface physicochemical properties (such as abrasion resistance and corrosion resistance), mechanical properties (such as load-bearing capacity and stability), and environmental requirements (such as formaldehyde emission and heavy metal content) for office chairs. These indicators ensure that office chairs maintain full functionality over long-term use while minimizing potential harm to the environment and human health.
  3. Configuration Standards: The guidelines require that the dimensions of office chairs must match the area of office spaces, and the quantity and price must not exceed the upper limits set by relevant standards. For example, the number of seats should be reasonably configured based on the size of the office space to avoid resource waste or overcrowding, while price controls prevent over-budget procurement.

Specifications for Reading Venues
According to the "Office Furniture - Reading Tables, Chairs, and Stools" (GB/T 14531-2017) and its revised draft for comments, the specifications for chairs used in reading venues focus on quality, safety, and user experience.

  1. Quality Requirements: The standards specify testing methods for impact resistance and scratch resistance to ensure that the chairs are not easily damaged during frequent use. For example, the seat surface must pass mechanical tests simulating long-term sitting pressure, and the chair back must withstand a certain level of impact without deformation.
  2. Dimensional Compatibility: The standards emphasize the matching of chair height and depth with reading tables to comply with ergonomic design and reduce user fatigue. For example, the height of the seat surface should be coordinated with the height of the table surface to ensure that users maintain a natural sitting posture.
  3. Adjustment of Physicochemical Properties: The revised version imposes higher requirements on indicators such as surface scratch resistance and covering materials and updates the testing methods. For example, soft coverings must pass stricter scratch resistance tests to adapt to high-frequency use scenarios in public places.

Both sets of specifications reflect a comprehensive consideration of the functionality, safety, and cost-effectiveness of office chairs, but the emphasis varies depending on the usage scenario. Standards for central administrative institutions focus more on standardization and cost control, while those for reading venues emphasize durability and ergonomic compatibility.
