Office Chair Special Glue

Admin October 09, 2026

The special glue for office chairs needs to be designed according to the characteristics of PP materials, primarily addressing the challenge of bonding low-surface-energy materials while also considering flexibility, environmental friendliness, and strength.

1. Bonding Principles for PP Materials

PP (polypropylene) is a non-polar polymer material with extremely low surface energy (approximately 29-32 mN/m). Ordinary glues cannot effectively wet its surface, making it difficult to form intermolecular forces and resulting in insufficient bonding strength. Special glues need to solve this problem through two technical approaches:

  • Surface Treatment Compatibility Technology: Increase the surface roughness of PP or introduce polar groups through chemical or physical methods (such as plasma treatment or corona discharge) to enhance surface energy and improve glue wetting.
  • Formula Design: Add polar monomers (such as acrylates or maleic anhydride) or compatibilizers (such as PP grafts) to the glue. Through copolymerization or blending modification, the glue forms chemical bonds or strong physical adsorption with the PP surface, thereby improving adhesion.

2. Performance Balance of the Cured Layer

Office chairs need to withstand repeated stress during use (such as changes in sitting posture and movement friction). Therefore, after curing, the glue needs to achieve a balance between flexibility and rigidity:

  • Flexibility: To avoid cracking due to stress concentration, elastomers (such as polyurethane or rubber particles) should be selected as toughening agents, or low-modulus formulas should be used.
  • Rigidity: To ensure structural stability, crosslinking agents (such as isocyanates or peroxides) should be used to form a three-dimensional network structure, enhancing cohesive strength.
For example, reactive hot-melt adhesives (PUR) form a flexible polyurethane network through moisture curing, combining high strength with impact resistance, making them suitable for dynamic load scenarios of PP seats.

3. Environmental and Safety Requirements

Office environments require strict control over the release of volatile organic compounds (VOCs). Glues must meet the following standards:

  • Low-solvent or solvent-free systems: Use reactive hot-melt adhesives (100% solid content) or ultraviolet-curing adhesives (UV glues) to avoid air pollution from solvent evaporation.
  • Low-odor design: Optimize formulas to reduce residual monomers or additives, complying with international environmental certifications (such as GREENGUARD or GECA).
  • Aging resistance: Add antioxidants or ultraviolet absorbers to prevent yellowing or embrittlement of the adhesive layer during long-term use, ensuring indoor air quality and product lifespan.

Summary: The special glue for PP office chairs needs to achieve high-strength, fatigue-resistant, and safe bonding through surface modification, elastic-rigid balance design, and environmentally friendly formulas, meeting the stringent demands of office scenarios.
