Office Chair Standards in Spain

Admin October 08, 2026

The main standards for office chairs in Spain are UNE 57115 and UNE EN 1335 - 1:2021.

UNE 57115 Standard:

  • Scope of Application: This standard applies to commonly used swivel chairs in office settings, covering both models with armrests and those without. This means that whether it is a simple office swivel chair without armrests or one equipped with armrests to provide more comfort, it must comply with this standard.
  • Requirements: It sets out clear requirements for the materials, structure, and functional components of the chairs. In terms of materials, quality, durability, and safety must be ensured; the structure should be reasonably sturdy; and functional components such as the seat surface, backrest, armrests, base, gas lift, and casters must all meet the corresponding standards.
  • Test Items: It includes stability tests to ensure that the chair will not tip over during normal use and in various possible situations; durability tests to check the chair's performance after long-term use; caster wear tests to examine the wear condition of the casters after frequent movement; gas lift durability tests to ensure the stable operation of the gas lift; and armrest strength tests to ensure that the armrests can withstand a certain amount of pressure.

UNE EN 1335 - 1:2021 Standard:

  • Test Items: It has general design requirements to ensure the rationality and safety of office chairs from an overall design perspective. There are a variety of stability test items, including seat front edge stability tests, forward stability tests, etc., comprehensively considering the stability of the chair in different directions and states. Seat front static pressure tests, seat and backrest static pressure tests, etc., are conducted to check the pressure-bearing capacity of various parts of the chair. The seat and backrest tests require 260,000 cycles to simulate long-term use. There are also armrest tests, rotation tests, footrest durability tests, etc., which conduct detailed inspections on each functional component of the office chair.
