Office Chair Spacing

Admin October 08, 2026

Office chair spacing should be determined based on different scenarios, with the following specific requirements:

In open office areas, it is recommended to maintain a seat spacing of 1200 - 1500mm. This range not only prevents interference when people move around but also meets the basic requirements of fire exits. If the spacing is too small, employees may collide when getting up or moving; if it is too large, it may waste space and reduce the utilization rate of the office area.

For conventional workstation horizontal spacing (face-to-face or side-by-side layouts), there are two categories:

  • Basic Compliance Spacing: The distance from the edge of one desk to the edge of the opposite desk should be no less than 1.2 meters, meeting basic activity needs but possibly feeling a bit cramped.
  • Comfortable and Spacious Spacing: The desk spacing should be 1.4 meters - 1.6 meters, providing more ample activity space, reducing visual pressure, and being suitable for teams that require frequent communication or collaboration.

For back-to-back workstation vertical spacing, note the following:

  • Minimum Compliance Standard: The clear distance between the backs of two rows of workstations should be no less than 1.5 meters to ensure personnel passage and emergency evacuation.
  • Optimized Recommended Standard: The back clear distance should be 1.8 meters - 2.0 meters, which can accommodate file cabinets or green plants, enhance environmental comfort, and reduce noise interference.

For workstation side spacing (between adjacent workstations), there are two situations:

  • Basic Side Spacing: The distance between the partitions or desk sides of adjacent workstations should be no less than 0.8 meters, meeting basic privacy needs but possibly limiting arm movement range.
  • Side Spacing for Workstations with Cabinets: If the workstation has side cabinets or drawers, the spacing should be increased to 1.0 meter to avoid the cabinet doors occupying public space when opened or employees colliding when retrieving items.

The seating layout in conference rooms should balance comfort and passage efficiency:

  • When using swivel chairs, each seat width should be guaranteed to be 800mm to ensure employees sit comfortably and avoid squeezing.
  • The row spacing (distance between front and back rows of seats) should be no less than 1000mm to facilitate personnel entry and exit and avoid colliding with the front row seats when getting up.

Reasonable planning of office chair spacing can not only improve work efficiency but also ensure employee health and safety, and should be flexibly adjusted according to actual scenarios.
