Office Chair Solid Waste

Admin October 08, 2026

**"Office Chair Solid Waste" primarily involves two major areas: solid waste management and resource reuse, which can be specifically categorized into two scenarios: violation cases and recycling. **

1. Imported office chair components may be classified as solid waste

On November 26, 2025, Shanghai Pudong International Airport Customs uncovered a case of imported goods violation. The party involved declared the import of "foam for office chairs and fixing parts for office chair cushions" (total weight: 45.8 kilograms), which was professionally identified as solid waste. According to Article 23 of the Law of the People's Republic of China on the Prevention and Control of Environmental Pollution by Solid Waste, the import of solid waste must strictly comply with national regulations, and goods without permission or not meeting environmental standards are prohibited from entering the country. Due to this violation, the batch of goods was returned out of the country on May 28, 2026, and the party involved was fined 1,000 yuan. This case indicates that components such as foam and fixing parts of office chairs, if of unknown origin or not meeting environmental requirements, may be classified as solid waste and need to be handled through legal channels.

2. Discarded office chairs can achieve solid resource reuse through disassembly

In the field of resource recycling, the recycling and disposal of office chairs have formed a systematic model. Taking the Meilan District of Haikou as an example, the locally established environmental protection system for office furniture recycling professionally disassembles discarded office chairs into solid materials such as metal frames, wooden components, sponge, and fabric. After regeneration treatment, these materials can be reused to manufacture new furniture or serve as industrial raw materials. For instance, metal frames can be smelted into steel, wooden components can be processed into panels, and sponge and fabric can be transformed into sound-absorbing materials or fillers through processes such as crushing and compression. This model not only reduces the amount of solid waste but also lowers the environmental load through closed-loop resource utilization, aligning with the concept of sustainable development.

3. Core principles of solid waste management

The aforementioned cases and recycling practices collectively reflect two major principles of solid waste management: First, strictly supervise the import process to prevent the illegal entry of solid waste from abroad; second, promote the recycling of domestic waste and transform solid materials into reusable resources through technological means. For enterprises, it is essential to ensure that goods comply with environmental standards during the import process to avoid penalties for violations; during production and disposal stages, they should actively participate in the recycling system and reduce environmental risks through compliant disassembly and regeneration treatment.
