Slow Lifting and Lowering of Office Chairs
Admin October 19, 2026
Slow lifting and lowering of office chairs are usually caused by aging of the gas lift or seals, and can be resolved by adjusting, lubricating, or replacing components. Here are the specific methods:

I. Common Troubleshooting
- Check the Top Knob of the Gas Lift
Some models of gas lifts are equipped with a resistance adjustment ring (located at the connection between the seat and the gas lift). Rotating it counterclockwise by 1-2 turns can reduce the lowering resistance. If there is still no improvement after adjustment, further inspection of other components is required. - Lubricate the Seals
Use a cotton swab to apply a small amount of silicone grease to the telescopic rod of the gas lift (avoid using oil-based lubricants), focusing on the metal friction surface at the connection between the base and the gas rod. Lubrication can reduce seal wear and restore smooth lifting and lowering. - Safety Inspection
If there is a hissing sound when pressing down on the seat, it indicates that the internal seal of the gas lift has failed, and it should be immediately taken out of service and replaced with a new component. Air leakage may cause the gas lift to suddenly fail, posing a safety hazard.
II. DIY Solutions
- Gently Tap the Stuck Area
After removing the seat cushion, observe the top interface of the gas lift. Gently tap the connection several times with a rubber mallet to redistribute the stuck lubricant inside. This method has a relatively high success rate for chairs purchased within the last six months, but be sure to control the force to avoid damaging the components. - Replace the Gas Lift (Long-term Solution)
If the chair has been in use for more than 5 years or frequently experiences lifting and lowering failures, it is recommended to replace it with a Class 4 gas lift (diameter โฅ 38mm) that complies with ISO certification. Its design life is about 100,000 lifting and lowering cycles, far exceeding that of a Class 3 gas lift (30,000-50,000 cycles), and it provides more stable support.
III. Precautions
- Avoid Incorrect Operations
The gas rod itself should not be directly lubricated; only the metal surface at the connection needs to be treated. If the problem persists after DIY treatment, contact a professional repair technician to avoid the gas lift bursting due to improper operation. - Daily Maintenance Suggestions
- Avoid vertical impact from heavy objects on the seat, especially for users weighing over 90kg. Frequent and rapid lifting and lowering can accelerate seal wear.
- Regularly inspect the appearance of the gas lift. If deformation, air leakage, or abnormal lifting and lowering are found, it should be immediately taken out of service.
- For chairs that have been idle for a long time, perform regular lifting and lowering tests to prevent the internal lubricant from solidifying and causing sticking.
Tip: The gas lift is a high-pressure component, and non-professionals should never disassemble it themselves. If the chair is out of warranty and frequently fails, replacing the gas lift is a safer and more economical choice.
