Office Chair Slope Adjustment

Admin October 12, 2026

The adjustment of the slope (tilt) of an office chair should be based on the needs of the scenario, selecting an appropriate angle and operating scientifically through levers, knobs, or electric methods, while also paying attention to avoiding health risks.

I. Basis for Angle Selection

According to national standards, the original reference angle (the angle between the backrest and the seat) of an office chair should be between 90ยฐ and 95ยฐ. In actual use, 90ยฐ-110ยฐ is recommended for focused work, as this range can maintain the natural curvature of the spine and reduce lumbar pressure; 110ยฐ-130ยฐ can be adjusted for lunch breaks and relaxation, but it should be noted that the recline angle should not exceed 120ยฐ, otherwise it will significantly reduce concentration and may cause health problems.

II. Adjustment Methods and Steps

  1. Lever-Type Adjustment

    • Operation: There is usually a lever under the seat. After pulling or pushing it, lean back to change the angle of the backrest, and it will lock at the current angle when released. After sitting down, pull up or push back the control lever with your hand, unlock the backrest, lean back slowly to a comfortable angle, and release the control lever to lock it.
    • Applicable Scenarios: Suitable for scenarios that require quick angle adjustments, such as short breaks or switching work states.
  2. Knob-Type Adjustment

    • Operation: Commonly found on the side or back of the chair, the tightness of the gas spring is adjusted by rotating the knob, thereby controlling the resistance of the recline or locking the angle. Rotate counterclockwise to reduce the recline resistance and clockwise to increase it. Adjust while rotating and feeling the angle change.
    • Applicable Scenarios: Suitable for users who need fine adjustment of the recline resistance, such as those with significant body size differences or special requirements for support.
  3. Electric Adjustment

    • Operation: Some high-end office chairs use electric adjustment, achieving precise and stepless angle adjustment through buttons and control panels. Press or toggle the corresponding buttons or joysticks on the control panel, and the backrest will automatically and smoothly tilt forward or backward.
    • Applicable Scenarios: Suitable for users who pursue convenience and comfort, such as those who work for long periods or need to frequently adjust the angle.

III. Precautions

Improper tilt angles, especially excessive recline angles, can pose health risks. Excessive recline of the head can cause the cervical spine to deviate from its normal physiological curvature, leading to cervical spine strain, pain, and even the induction of cervical spondylosis over time; the recline posture may compress the chest cavity, limiting lung expansion and causing difficulty in breathing; it can also affect blood supply to the brain, causing dizziness and lack of energy. Therefore, a recline angle exceeding 120ยฐ is completely unsuitable for work needs and should be strictly avoided.
