Office Chair Sliding Repair

Admin October 09, 2026

Office chair sliding is usually caused by the failure of the gas lift rod and can be resolved through preliminary troubleshooting, targeted repairs, and regular maintenance.

Preliminary Troubleshooting

  1. Press Test: Quickly press down on the seat with your hand. If the rebound is weak or the seat goes all the way to the bottom, it indicates that the gas lift rod may be leaking air.
  2. Sit and Listen: After sitting on the chair, remain still. If you hear a continuous hissing sound from the bottom, it further confirms a sealing issue with the gas lift rod.
  3. Observe Performance: Check if the chair sinks automatically without adjustment or shows significant tilting, suggesting a loss of pressure in the gas lift rod or deformation of the base.
  4. Inspect Other Components: Ensure that the adjustment valve/locking mechanism is free from foreign object blockages and that screws and bolts are tight. For electric height-adjustable chairs, check the power supply, circuitry, and motor for normal operation.

Repair Methods

  1. Replace the Gas Lift Rod
    • Prepare Tools and Parts: You will need a hammer (or a large adjustable wrench), lubricating oil, and a new gas lift rod that matches the original chair's specifications (prioritize products with SGS Level 4 certification, TUV certification, or compliance with the GB/T 2280-2016 standard).
    • Remove the Old Gas Lift Rod: Raise the chair to its highest position and turn it upside down, placing a soft cloth on the ground to protect it. Gently tap the edge of the central sleeve of the five-star base with a hammer to separate the base from the gas lift rod. If it is rusted, apply lubricating oil to assist in removal.
    • Install the New Gas Lift Rod: Insert the new gas lift rod into the corresponding position and ensure it is securely installed.
  2. Adjust or Tighten Connectors: If the chair sinks due to the adjustment lever constantly pressing against the valve or loose connectors, try adjusting or tightening the relevant components. However, this method may not completely solve the problem and carries the risk of recurrence.

Regular Maintenance

  1. Control Weight Load: Avoid prolonged use with excessive weight (the general weight limit for office chairs is 100-120kg) to prevent deformation of the base steel plate.
  2. Reduce Impact: Avoid subjecting the chair to violent impacts to prevent damage to the gas lift rod or base structure.

By conducting systematic troubleshooting, performing standardized repairs, and conducting regular maintenance, you can effectively resolve the issue of office chair sliding and extend its service life. If you find it difficult to repair the chair yourself, it is recommended to contact a professional repair technician.
