Office Chair Sleeve Replacement
Admin October 22, 2026
The replacement of the sleeve on an office chair can be carried out according to the following steps:

I. Preliminary Preparation and Removal of Old Components
Remove the old chair cover and cushion:
- Unscrew the chair seat from the base. Use a screwdriver to turn the screws counterclockwise and store them properly.
- Use the back of a hammer or a multi-purpose upholstery tool. Insert the end of the tool under the tacks or staples that secure the fabric and lift them one by one to loosen the fabric.
- Remove the fabric and cushion. If you need to replace the seat cushion, lift it off the seat. The filling in old chairs may be a mixture of hay and fabric. It is recommended to replace it with a foam pad for improved comfort.
Inspect the seat base:
- Check if the base is damaged or weakened. If there are issues, it needs to be replaced. You can purchase a suitable replacement base or cut a piece of plywood according to the original base size: Place the old seat on the plywood, draw a line along the edge with a marker, cut along the line with a handsaw, and then secure the new base to the new foam and upholstery using a staple gun.
II. Steps for Installing the New Sleeve
Cut the dust cover fabric:
- Cut the fabric according to the size of the seat. Cover the seat base and cut around the edges. Uneven edges do not affect use. The dust cover prevents the pad from sagging onto the seat base.
Secure the dust cover:
- Lay the dust cover flat on the seat base and fix it along the edges with staples, ensuring the fabric is taut. It is recommended to start placing staples from the center of each side, then work outward and continuously pull the fabric to keep it flat.
Cut the foam pad:
- Use a foam pad with a thickness of 2 inches (5.1 cm). Place the seat frame on the foam, trace the outline with a pen or marker, and then cut along the lines with a serrated knife or an electric knife.
Place the foam pad and seat:
- Place the foam pad and seat on the padding fabric, with the foam directly in contact with the pad and the seat frame on the foam with the bottom facing up. Ensure they are centered. Start with a large piece of padding fabric and trim it as needed later.
Cut the padding:
- Cut off 2 inches (5.1 cm) of the padding outside the edge of the seat. Mark the cutting position on the filling with a permanent marker, or cut it directly while wrapping it around the edge of the seat. The edge of the filling should extend upward and exceed the back edge of the seat by 2 inches. Do this for all sides.
Secure the padding:
- Staple the padding layer to the back of the seat, starting from the center and working outward. Pull the padding tight along each side while fixing. Repeat the process for the other sides. At the corners, fold the padding and secure it with staples. Gather the excess fabric, fold it again, and secure it.
III. Handling Special Structures
If the office chair has a sleeve structure at the part connected to the gas lift, you can usually separate the seat cushion by simply pulling it upward. Before operating, make sure the chair is at its lowest height and disconnect the power (for models with electric adjustment functions) to ensure safety.
