Sliding Down from Office Chair While Sleeping

Admin October 17, 2026

The main reasons for sliding down from an office chair while sleeping are the movable backrest and the failure of the gas lift (gas spring), which can be addressed accordingly.

If the sliding is caused by a movable backrest, it is because the backrest can move, and when sleeping, the body's weight presses on the backrest, causing the buttocks to move forward and slide off the chair. In this case, replacing it with a recliner is a good solution. A recliner provides more stable support, keeping the body in a more comfortable and stable state during rest and preventing sliding. For example, Nev Niceway folding beds, Wandai folding beds, and Restar folding beds are all good choices. Resting on these recliners is more effective than resting on a desk and can improve the quality of rest.

If the root cause of the sliding is the failure of the gas lift (gas spring), such as wear on the internal seal ring or nitrogen leakage, resulting in a loss of locking force, sliding may occur, accompanied by symptoms such as slow automatic sinking, inability to rebound with pressure, audible air leaks, and seat misalignment. To address the issue of a failed gas lift, you can first perform a "three-step self-check": First, the pressure test: A normal gas lift should rebound quickly and with some resistance after being pressed. If there is no resistance or the rebound is slow, there may be a problem. Second, sit quietly and listen: Sit on the chair and listen for any air leaks. If there is, it may indicate that the gas lift is not sealed properly. Third, observe the performance: Check if the chair is slowly sinking automatically or if the seat is misaligned. In addition, check if there are any foreign objects blocking the adjustment valve/locking mechanism at the bottom of the chair, ensure that all screws and bolts at the connection points are tightened, and if it is an electric lift chair, check the power supply, circuit, and motor. If the gas lift is confirmed to be damaged, replacing it yourself is a cost-effective solution. You will need a hammer (or a large adjustable wrench), a small amount of lubricant, and purchase a new gas lift that matches the specifications and has safety certification. Then, follow steps such as pre-lifting and inverting, separating the base, etc., to perform the replacement.
