Office Chair Size Guide

Admin October 22, 2026

When choosing the size of an office chair, factors such as the seat, height, backrest, and usage scenarios need to be comprehensively considered. Here is a specific guide:

I. Basic Size Standards

  1. Seat Size: Fixed-style seats typically have a width of 40-45 centimeters. It is advisable to choose adjustable models with a recommended adjustment range of 38-48 centimeters to accommodate individuals with heights ranging from 1.6 meters to 1.9 meters. The seat depth should fully support the buttocks, and the seat width should allow the user to move freely.
  2. Height Standards: The national standard seat height is 40-50 centimeters. When seated, the feet should be firmly planted on the ground, and it should be easy to insert the palm under the thighs. If the feet cannot touch the ground, a footrest is required; if the legs are compressed by the front edge of the chair, the seat height needs to be increased. Office chairs should be paired with a desk height of approximately 740 millimeters. If the desk height is fixed, the chair's seat height adjustment range should cover 440-540 millimeters to accommodate different body types.

II. Backrest and Special Designs

  1. Backrest Height: The height of a regular backrest should conform to the curve of the lower back, while special models (such as those with headrests) can reach a total height of 120 centimeters. For split-style backrests, attention should be paid to the thickness of the connecting steel plate, and it is recommended to choose a steel plate with a thickness of 6-8 millimeters to ensure stability.
  2. Lumbar Support: The backrest should precisely support the lower back to avoid a hollow feeling in the waist. For those who need to sit for long periods, it is advisable to choose a chair with an adjustable lumbar support or an ergonomic backrest design.

III. Size Adaptation for Different Scenarios

  1. Employee Workstations:
    • Ergonomic chairs: The essential space required is approximately 165 centimeters (60cm desk + 65cm recline + 40cm aisle), while a comfortable space is recommended to be 195 centimeters (60cm desk + 65cm recline + 70cm aisle).
    • Regular backrest chairs: The essential space required is approximately 135 centimeters (60cm desk + 35cm recline + 40cm aisle), while a comfortable space is recommended to be 155 centimeters (60cm desk + 35cm recline + 60cm aisle).
    • Stools: The essential space required is approximately 125 centimeters (60cm desk + 25cm recline + 40cm aisle), while a comfortable space is recommended to be 145 centimeters (60cm desk + 25cm recline + 60cm aisle). However, stools are not recommended for long-term office use.
  2. Reception Desks:
    • Ergonomic chairs: It is recommended to have an activity space of 90-120 centimeters to accommodate frequent standing up and receiving guests.
    • Regular backrest chairs: The depth should be 70-90 centimeters to ensure smooth standing up and sitting down movements.
    • Regular stools: Only 60-80 centimeters of space is required, but they lack lumbar support and are not suitable for long-term sitting.
  3. Boss's Office:
    • Metal executive chairs: A space of 0.8-1 meter should be reserved at the back to convey a sense of stability and authority.
    • Ergonomic chairs: For authoritative meeting scenarios, a distance of 1.5-2 meters is recommended to balance comfort and communication efficiency.

IV. Space Optimization Suggestions
In a small home office, the diameter of the office chair's base should be controlled within 65 centimeters, and the armrests should be rotatable or retractable to save horizontal space. If space is limited, it is advisable to choose models without armrests or foldable chairs.
