What is the Appropriate Size for an Office Chair

Admin October 12, 2026

The appropriate size of an office chair should be selected based on a combination of seat height, cushion dimensions, and backrest height. The specific criteria are as follows:

1. Seat Height Range
It is recommended to choose an office chair with an adjustable seat height, with a suggested adjustment range of 38 to 48 centimeters. This range can accommodate individuals with heights ranging from 160 to 190 centimeters. For those around 160 centimeters tall, the seat height should be adjusted to approximately 38 to 40 centimeters to ensure both feet are flat on the ground. For individuals who are 190 centimeters tall, the seat height should be adjusted to 45 to 48 centimeters to avoid leg suspension. If choosing a fixed-height model, the seat height is typically 40 to 45 centimeters, but its adaptability is poor and is only suitable for individuals close to the average height (e.g., 170 to 175 centimeters). Additionally, there should be a 25 to 30 centimeter drop between the chair surface and the desk surface, allowing the arms to hang naturally with the elbows bent at a 90ยฐ angle, reducing shoulder and neck strain.

2. Cushion Dimensions
The cushion must meet dual standards for width and depth:

  • Width: Based on shoulder width when arms hang naturally, it is generally recommended that the cushion width be โ‰ฅ40 centimeters to ensure there is a 1 to 2 centimeter margin on both sides of the hips, avoiding pressure.
  • Depth: The distance from the front edge of the cushion to the backrest should cover the length of the thighs. The standard range is 38 to 45 centimeters, suitable for individuals with heights ranging from 155 to 190 centimeters and weights from 45 to 120 kilograms. A cushion that is too short will cause the thighs to hang, putting pressure on blood vessels; a cushion that is too long may press against the back of the knees, affecting blood circulation. When testing, lean your back against the backrest, move your hips back as far as possible, and if there is a 2 to 3 finger gap between the back of the knees and the front edge of the cushion, the depth is appropriate.

3. Backrest Height
The height of the backrest should match the shoulder height in a sitting position, with a standard range of 52 to 65 centimeters, accommodating individuals with heights ranging from 150 to 190 centimeters:

  • For those who are 150 centimeters tall, the backrest height should be approximately 52 centimeters to support the lower back;
  • For individuals who are 190 centimeters tall, the backrest height should reach 65 centimeters to cover the scapular region.
    If choosing a special model with a headrest, the total height can reach 120 centimeters, but it is important to note that the connecting steel plate of a split backrest should be โ‰ฅ6 millimeters thick to ensure load-bearing safety; for an integrated backrest, check whether the lumbar support area fits the spinal curve.

Summary: Prioritize choosing an office chair with adjustable seat height and depth, and ensure a reasonable drop between the chair surface and the desk surface. When testing, simulate an office scenario: feet flat on the ground, arms hanging naturally, back leaning against the backrest, and a gap behind the knees. If these conditions are met, the size can be considered appropriate.
