Office Chair Situation

Admin October 09, 2026

Office chairs are chairs equipped for convenience in daily work and social activities. In a broad sense, they cover all chairs used in offices, while in a narrow sense, they refer to backrest chairs used for desk work in a sitting position. Office swivel chairs are office seats equipped with rotation and height adjustment functions.

I. Classification and Structure
OfficeMate classifies office chairs into two categories: narrow and broad. The narrow category refers to backrest chairs used for desk work in a sitting position, while the broad category includes all office chairs such as executive chairs and staff chairs. Office swivel chairs are office supplies that encompass a series including executive chairs, mid-back chairs, and staff chairs. Their core components are the seat cushion, backrest, five-star base, casters, and pneumatic height adjustment system. Executive chairs feature a high-back structure and come standard with armrests, while staff chairs have a low-back design without armrests. Pneumatic rods are used to adjust the height, and elastic supports and casters enable rotation buffering and movement locking functions.

II. Function and Design
Office swivel chairs are designed in accordance with ergonomic principles. They maintain the natural physiological curvature through adjustable lumbar supports, armrests, and headrests, reducing fatigue from prolonged sitting. Their rotation and height adjustment functions allow users to flexibly adjust their working postures to meet the demands of different scenarios, such as office, home, and medical environments. Some intelligent products integrate pressure sensors, health monitoring systems, and APP control functions, enabling real-time monitoring of sitting posture data and providing health recommendations.

III. History and Development
The prototype of office chairs can be traced back to the forward-tilting wooden chairs of ancient Egypt around 1900 BC. In 1849, Thomas Warren invented the first modern office chair, featuring rotation, sliding, and an elastic soft seat surface. China's office chair industry has developed through OEM models since 2000, with Anji County in Zhejiang Province becoming a global production base. In 2024, China's production reached 177 million pieces, with exports of 84.64 million pieces. The industry is showing a trend towards intelligence, and it is expected that the market size of hydraulic lift swivel chairs will exceed 16 billion yuan by 2025.

IV. Quality and Safety
The quality and safety issues of office chairs have attracted significant attention. In March 2023, the United States and Canada recalled office chairs made in China due to the risk of backrest breakage, resulting in 12 reports and 10 injuries. In September 2024, the State Administration for Market Regulation of China found 15 batches of non-compliant products during inspections, with stability issues being prominent. In January 2025, the United States recalled WorkPro Momentum office chairs due to bolt failure, resulting in 7 reports and 2 minor injuries.
