Office Chair Sinking Issue Repair

Admin October 22, 2026

If an office chair has a sinking issue, it can be repaired using either a hose clamp or a PVC pipe. Here are the specific steps:

Repair Using a Hose Clamp

Step 1: Expose the Cylinder Slide the plastic skirt (decorative cover) at the bottom of the office chair off the cylindrical metal cylinder to fully expose the cylinder itself. Be careful not to damage the plastic parts during this step. If the skirt is tightly attached to the cylinder, gently rotate it and then pull it upward.

Step 2: Adjust the Height Adjust the chair to the desired height, ensuring that when the user stands, the chair seat is level with the knees. This height reduces the pressure on the lumbar spine during long-term use and provides a stable reference for subsequent fixation.

Step 3: Enhance the Clamping Force Wrap a hose clamp (made of metal or plastic) around the surface of the cylinder. If the clamp slides easily due to the smooth surface of the cylinder, improve the friction as follows:

  • Wrap with auxiliary materials: First, wrap a layer of rubber tape or adhesive tape around the cylinder to increase its surface roughness.
  • Surface treatment: Gently sand the surface of the cylinder with sandpaper to remove the oxide layer or smooth coating.

Step 4: Fix and Test Tighten the hose clamp to the maximum extent to ensure it fits snugly against the cylinder. Slowly sit on the chair and observe whether the height remains stable. If there is still slight sinking, further adjust the position of the clamp or increase the number of wraps.

Repair Using a PVC Pipe

Step 1: Measure the Cylinder Parameters Use a tape measure to measure the diameter and length of the cylinder. Ensure that the inner diameter of the purchased PVC pipe is slightly larger than the diameter of the cylinder (usually 1-2 mm larger), and the length should cover the range of motion of the cylinder. For example, if the diameter of the cylinder is 5 cm, choose a PVC pipe with an inner diameter of 5.2 cm.

Step 2: Process the Pipe Use a saw or PVC cutting tool to cut a straight slit along the pipe. The width of the slit should allow the pipe to be slightly opened and then slipped over the cylinder. Keep the cut smooth to avoid burrs scratching the surface of the cylinder.

Step 3: Install and Fix Slip the processed PVC pipe over the cylinder, ensuring that the slit faces the bottom of the chair (for easy concealment). Adjust the position of the pipe to the key area for height adjustment of the chair, and fix the two ends of the pipe with tape or cable ties to prevent it from sliding or falling off.

Step 4: Verify the Effect Repeatedly sit and stand up to check whether the height of the chair remains stable. If the gap between the pipe and the cylinder is too large, stick rubber pads or friction plates on the inner wall of the pipe to enhance the fixing effect.

Precautions:

  • Turn off the height adjustment valve of the chair (if any) before operation to avoid accidental triggering and injury.
  • If the cylinder is severely leaking or damaged, it is recommended to replace it with a new one rather than making a temporary repair.
  • Regularly check the tightness of the fixing device to prevent loosening due to long-term use.
