Sinking Feeling of Office Chairs
The fundamental reason for the sinking feeling in office chairs is the reduction in elasticity and loss of support of the filling material, which is essentially a mechanical fatigue (aging) phenomenon after the material has been under pressure for a long time. Improper usage habits and issues with the bottom support structure can also accelerate this process.

Causes of Sinking
- Filling Material Issues: Over time, sponge compresses and deforms, and the elastic support of mesh fabric fails. Mesh fabrics with fewer elastic components and lower weaving density are more prone to elasticity reduction and structural looseness.
- Improper Usage Habits: Continuous pressure from heavy users and prolonged sitting while leaning on one side exceed the material's ultimate bearing capacity, accelerating sinking.
- Bottom Support Structure Issues: Aging or damage to the chair's bottom frame, springs, elastic bands, etc., leads to a loss of overall support for the seat cushion.
Effects of Sinking
An aging and sinking office chair continuously presses on the buttocks, causing repeated soreness in the ischial region. It also strains the muscles around the lumbar spine, leading to lower back pain.
Countermeasures
- Mild Sinking (local depression less than 1 centimeter): Pat and knead the sunken area; for mesh seat cushions, tighten the screws or re-tension the straps; place a wooden board or cardboard under the cushion; ventilate and dry if deformed due to moisture; for sponge cushions, open them up to supplement or replace the filling; add a thin high-density sponge pad to the sunken area.
- Moderate Sinking (depression of 1 - 2 centimeters, overall looseness of the mesh fabric but no damage): If the chair is within the warranty period, contact the brand's after-sales service to request a free replacement of the mesh fabric or adjustment services; if the warranty has expired, purchase a replacement mesh fabric of the same size on your own. Ordinary dragon-patterned special mesh costs about 100 - 200 yuan, and U-mesh fabric costs about 200 - 300 yuan. You can install it yourself or seek third-party repair services.
- Severe Sinking (depression greater than 2 centimeters, damaged mesh fabric/loose frame): Repair is not recommended. Even if the mesh fabric is replaced, a loose frame will result in insufficient support, and the probability of subsequent sinking is high. If there are also issues such as loss of lumbar support and damage to adjustment functions, it is more cost-effective to replace the chair directly.
In addition, if you cannot replace the chair temporarily, choose a memory foam or gel seat cushion that is 3 to 5 centimeters thick with a hollow design in the middle; maintain a correct sitting posture, sit on the entire seat surface, and place a cushion behind your waist; get up every 30 minutes to get a glass of water and stretch for 2 minutes.
