Simple Guide to Drawing an Office Chair
Admin October 09, 2026
You can refer to the following steps for a simple drawing of an office chair:

I. Preparing Tools Select a pen that is easy to handle, such as a pencil, ballpoint pen, or marker, along with a flat sheet of paper. Pencils are suitable for beginners to make corrections, while markers can produce clearer line effects.
II. Basic Composition
- Drawing the Backrest Start with a rectangle as the base, narrow the bottom inward by about 15ยฐ-20ยฐ to form a slightly inclined trapezoidal outline. If you want to depict an ergonomic design, add an arc-shaped curve in the middle of the backrest to simulate the spinal support structure.
- Positioning the Seat Draw a rectangle or trapezoid below the backrest, with a width 20%-30% larger than that of the backrest. The bottom edge of the trapezoid can be slightly flared outward to enhance stability. The recommended height of the seat is one-third to one-half of the height of the backrest.
- Leg Structure Extend four straight lines downward from the four corners of the seat. The front legs can be perpendicular to the ground, while the back legs can be tilted outward by 5ยฐ-10ยฐ to form an inverted V-shaped support. If depicting a five-star caster chair, first draw a circular base, and then radiate five equal-length lines outward from the center as the chair legs.
III. Refining Details
- Armrest Design Add elongated structures on both sides above the seat, with a height of about one-third of the distance from the seat to the top of the backrest. For curved armrests, first draw a horizontal reference line, and then connect the backrest and the seat with smooth curves.
- Decorative Elements Add 2-3 horizontal or vertical parallel lines in the grid area of the backrest. The surface of the armrests can be drawn with fine dotted textures or wavy anti-slip patterns. If depicting leather material, use short arcs to represent leather wrinkles.
- Structural Reinforcement Add triangular reinforcement blocks at the joints of the chair legs. Two horizontal support bars can be drawn below the seat. For five-star casters, add circular wheels with a diameter of about one-fifth of the length of the chair legs at the end of each leg.
IV. Coloring (Optional)
- Material Representation Use silver-gray tones for metal components, light gray or off-white for plastic parts, and brown or black for leather areas.
- Light and Shadow Effects After determining the direction of the light source, add highlight areas on the left side of the backrest and draw shadows below the seat on the right side. For five-star casters, darken the color at the contact points between the wheels and the ground to represent shadows.
- Color Combinations For a business style, it is recommended to use a black + silver color scheme. For creative designs, a combination of bright yellow + sky blue can be used. For a wooden effect, use brown gradients to represent the texture.
Notes: When drawing, keep the proportions of each component coordinated. The recommended inclination angle of the backrest is between 100ยฐ-110ยฐ to conform to ergonomic principles. If depicting adjustable functions, add a gas rod structure below the backrest and represent the lifting device with a cylinder.
