Office Chair Shoulder Opening

Admin October 22, 2026

Shoulder opening while sitting on an office chair can be achieved through the following simple exercises, which help relieve shoulder and neck tension and improve posture:

Exercise 1: Unilateral Lateral Stretch

  1. Starting Position: Sit on the edge of the chair, keep your ischial bones (sit bones) firmly in contact with the seat surface, and maintain a natural extension of the spine, avoiding a hunched posture.
  2. Steps: Let one arm hang naturally by your side (e.g., the right arm), keep your back straight; turn the palm of the other arm (the left arm) inward, slowly raise it above your head, and tilt your body to the right side, feeling the stretch in your left shoulder and side waist. Hold for 15 - 20 seconds and then repeat on the other side.
  3. Mechanism: This side - bending movement stretches the trapezius and sternocleidomastoid muscles in the shoulder, relieving muscle stiffness caused by prolonged sitting and enhancing the flexibility of spinal lateral bending.

Exercise 2: Posterior Extension and Chest Push

  1. Starting Position: Adjust your sitting position to the front one - third of the chair, keep your back perpendicular to the ground, place your feet flat on the ground, and engage your core.
  2. Steps: Extend both hands backward and grasp the outer edges of the chair back (if the chair has no backrest, cross your hands behind your back). Inhale while keeping your shoulders down, and exhale while slowly pushing your chest forward, feeling the forward extension of the scapulae and the expansion of the chest. Hold for 10 - 15 seconds and then relax.
  3. Mechanism: By reversely stretching the pectoralis major and pectoralis minor muscles, this exercise improves the rounded - shoulder posture and activates the back muscle groups, promoting scapular stability.

Exercise 3: Seated Spinal Twist

  1. Starting Position: Keep sitting on the front one - third of the chair, keep your back straight, and spread your legs hip - width apart.
  2. Steps: Inhale and raise both arms to the sides at shoulder level. Exhale and use your spine as the axis, let your hands guide your body to twist to the right rear. You can lightly hold the right side of the chair back with your left hand to deepen the twist, and look over your right shoulder. Hold for 15 - 20 seconds and then repeat on the other side.
  3. Mechanism: The twisting movement stretches the anterior deltoid and back muscle groups in the shoulder, while promoting the rotational flexibility of the spine and relieving unilateral shoulder and neck pressure.

Precautions:

  • Perform the exercises slowly to avoid muscle strains caused by rapid twisting or over - stretching.
  • If you feel pain, stop immediately. It may indicate incorrect posture or a shoulder injury.
  • It is recommended to get up and move for 3 - 5 minutes every hour. Combining these exercises can more effectively prevent shoulder and neck problems.
