Office Chair Shock Absorber Removal

Admin October 16, 2026

The removal of shock absorber components in office chairs requires selecting the appropriate method based on the specific structure. It is recommended to wear protective gloves and clean the work area before operation to avoid losing small parts or getting scratched.

I. Removal Methods for Silent Wheels (with Shock Absorption Function)

  1. Straight-Insert Design: Wrap the base of the wheel axle with a towel and pull it diagonally upward until you hear a 'click' sound to unlock it. If the plastic becomes brittle in winter, first use a hairdryer to heat the connection for 20 seconds to soften the material, then gently tap a wooden block against the base of the wheel axle with a hammer to loosen it.
  2. Metal Leg Press-Type Clip: Invert the chair and use a flat-head screwdriver to press against the edge of the circular recess on the wheel base, slowly prying up the clip. Ensure even pressure to avoid scratching the metal surface.
  3. Plastic Base Rotary Lock: Rotate the wheel base 45 degrees counterclockwise while pressing downward to release the lock. If rotation is obstructed, gently tap the edge of the wheel base with a rubber mallet to assist in loosening.

II. Techniques for Handling Stubborn Wheels

  1. Rusted Metal Wheel Axles: Inject 5 ml of white vinegar along the gap between the wheel axle and the wheel base using a syringe, and let it sit for 15 minutes to dissolve the rust layer. Use a pipe wrench with a cloth pad to grip the wheel axle and slowly rotate and pull it out, avoiding direct force that could cause the axle to break.
  2. Nylon Wheels: Low temperatures in winter can harden nylon. Before removal, soak the connection in warm water for 2 minutes to restore elasticity. If the wheel is stuck, briefly heat the wheel base with a heat gun on a low setting, but maintain a distance of over 10 cm to prevent deformation.

III. General Steps for Removing Shock Absorber Components

  1. Screw-Fixed Type: Use a screwdriver or wrench of the corresponding size to rotate the fixing screws counterclockwise. If the screws are rusted, drip a small amount of lubricant (such as WD-40) and let it sit for 5 minutes before operating. After removing the screws, gently shake the shock absorber to separate it from the frame.
  2. Clip or Pin Connection Type: Insert a plastic pry tool or an old credit card along the gap and slowly separate the clip. If it is a pin connection, use needle-nose pliers to grip the end of the pin and gently pull it out, avoiding damage to the hole.

IV. Precautions

  • Cleaning and Lubrication: Before removal, check the interface of the wheel base or shock absorber for any residual debris. Use a cotton swab dipped in petroleum jelly to lubricate the connection to reduce resistance for future removal.
  • Regular Maintenance: Every quarter, use an old toothbrush to clean hair fibers from the gaps in the wheels to prevent them from wrapping around the axle and causing jamming.
  • Safe Operation: If unsure about the structure, it is recommended to take photos or videos and consult the merchant's customer service or refer to the brand's official disassembly tutorial to avoid damaging components through forced removal.
