Office Chair Shaft Wobbling
Admin October 22, 2026
Office chair shaft wobbling may be caused by shaft damage, bearing wear, loose screws, gas lift rod wear, or base deformation, requiring targeted troubleshooting and repair.

1. Identifying the Wobbling Location
- Sitting Test: Sit on the chair and gently sway your body forward, backward, left, and right to identify the most noticeably wobbling part (such as the armrests, seat cushion, base, or leg connections).
- Key Component Inspection:
- Screws: Check all visible screws for looseness, especially at the connections between the chair legs, armrests, and seat cushion.
- Gas Lift Rod: Test for smooth rotation and height adjustment; if there is stuttering or sinking, it may indicate wear or air leakage.
- Base: Observe for looseness at the connections between the chair legs and crossbars, check for brittle fractures in the plastic clips inside the base cover, and see if the wheel axles are misaligned.
2. Repair Methods for Different Causes
Loose Screws:
- Use a screwdriver or wrench to loosen the loose screws counterclockwise, spray a small amount of WD40 around the screw holes for lubrication and rust removal, then tighten them clockwise.
- If the screw holes are enlarged due to wear, take a toothpick or thin wooden stick, dip it in white glue, and insert it into the hole. After the glue dries, reinsert the screw to enhance the fixing effect.
Worn or Leaking Gas Lift Rod:
- Replacing the Gas Lift Rod: The overall cost is about 19 yuan. Spray WD40 on the connection between the gas lift rod and the base, let it sit for 1 minute, and use a hairdryer on the hot air setting to soften the glue at the connection.
- Removing the Old Rod: Use a heavy-duty pipe wrench to grip the gas lift rod, rotate it counterclockwise, and pull it out with force. Clean any residue from the base mounting hole.
- Installing the New Rod: Insert the new gas lift rod vertically into the base hole and gently tap it with a hammer to ensure a secure connection.
Deformed Base or Worn Components:
- Disassembly Inspection: Open the base cover and check for broken plastic clips or misaligned wheel axles.
- Local Repair: If the clips are loose, use pliers to reposition them; if the plastic parts are shattered or the wheels are severely misaligned, replace the entire base assembly, ensuring to choose a compatible replacement for the original model.
Bearing or Shaft Damage (Common in Executive Chairs):
- When the bearing wear in an executive chair causes wobbling, replacement is more difficult, and it is recommended to contact a professional repair person, with costs typically around 50 yuan.
3. Precautions
- Ensure the chair is in a stable state before repairing to avoid tipping over during operation.
- Wear protective gloves when using tools to prevent cuts.
- If unfamiliar with the internal structure, prioritize contacting after-sales service or a professional repair person to avoid damaging other components.
