Office Chair Separation Piston

Admin October 17, 2026

The piston rod (gas spring) of the office chair separation mechanism requires careful handling. For routine maintenance, it is recommended to replace the entire gas spring assembly directly, without separating the piston rod individually. If you need to replace the gas spring, follow these steps:

1. Removing the Old Gas Spring

  1. Invert the Chair: Place the office chair upside down on a flat surface, ensuring sufficient operating space and preventing components from slipping off.
  2. Apply Lubricant: Evenly spray lubricant (such as WD-40) on the metal connections between the gas spring and the seat, as well as the five-star base. Let it sit for 5-10 minutes to allow the lubricant to penetrate rusted or stuck areas, reducing the difficulty of removal.

2. Separating the Seat from the Gas Spring

  1. Tap with a Rubber Mallet: Gently tap the connection between the seat and the gas spring with a rubber mallet to loosen rusted or stuck components through vibration.
  2. Rotate with Pipe Wrench Assistance: If tapping is ineffective, use a pipe wrench to grip the top of the gas spring (avoid gripping the piston rod directly) and rotate it slowly to loosen it. Note: The pipe wrench may scratch the surface of the gas spring, so control the force during operation.
  3. Reverse Push Method with a Hammer: If the above methods are still ineffective, tap the edge (not the center) of the connector with a hammer, using the reaction force to push out the gas spring. Wear thick cloth or a wooden board for protection during this step to prevent the gas spring from popping out unexpectedly.

3. Separating the Five-Star Base from the Gas Spring

Use the same method as for separating the seat:

  1. Tap or rotate the connector between the five-star base and the bottom of the gas spring to loosen it.
  2. If the connection is too tight, repeat the application of lubricant and let it sit, or combine tapping and rotating operations.

4. Precautions

  1. Avoid Destructive Disassembly: Separating the piston rod from the cylinder requires cutting the cylinder, but this step is unnecessary for routine maintenance. Destructive disassembly may lead to high-pressure nitrogen leakage or component damage, so it is recommended to replace the entire gas spring directly.
  2. Safety Risks: The high-pressure nitrogen (purity โ‰ฅ 99%) inside the gas spring may cause an explosion or component ejection if accidentally released. Non-professionals are advised to entrust the repair to professionals. If operating on your own, wear protective gear (such as goggles and thick gloves) throughout the process and ensure there are no flammable materials nearby.
  3. Troubleshooting: If the chair cannot be raised or lowered or is stuck, it may be due to worn seals or nitrogen leakage. Before replacing the gas spring, check for oil stains on the cylinder surface (a sign of seal failure).

Additional Explanation: The gas spring divides the cylinder into upper and lower chambers through a piston, using nitrogen compression and expansion to achieve lifting and lowering functions. After long-term use, seal aging or abnormal pressure may cause functional failure, in which case replacing the gas spring is the safest and most efficient solution.
