Office Chair Separation
Admin October 08, 2026
Office chair separation mainly involves the disassembly of parts such as the base and gas rod, as well as the gas rod and chair legs. The specific operations are as follows:

Separation of the Base and Gas Rod The connection between the base and the gas rod is usually achieved through a pneumatic lifting mechanism. To separate them, the locked state must be released first.
- Pre-step for Separation of the Chair Back: If the chair back and the base are detachable structures, the chair back needs to be separated first. Usually, the chair back is fixed with screws or snaps. Use corresponding tools (such as a screwdriver) to loosen the screws or press the snaps to remove it.
- Operating the Lifting Mechanism: Raise the gas rod to the highest position to ensure that the internal piston is fully extended. At this time, hold the seat cushion with one hand (to prevent parts from slipping off), and press the lifting lever (usually located under or on the side of the seat cushion) with the other hand while gently shaking the seat cushion. By repeatedly pressing and shaking, the connection between the gas rod and the base can be gradually loosened.
- Alternative Method: If the chair is designed with a knob-type or lever-type control for lifting, find the control handle on the front or side of the tray. Pull the handle upward forcefully (rotate the knob counterclockwise for the knob-type), and continue to apply force to separate the tray from the gas rod. Maintain balance during the separation process to prevent the tray from suddenly falling off.
Separation of the Gas Rod and Chair Legs The gas rod and the chair legs are usually connected through interference fits or threaded connections, and external force is required to break the connection state.
- Inverting and Fixing the Chair Legs: Invert the chair legs on a stable surface (such as the ground or a workbench) to ensure stability during operation. If the chair legs are made of a soft material (such as plastic), it is recommended to place a piece of wood on the contact surface to prevent damage during hammering.
- Hammering for Separation: Use a rubber mallet (preferred) or a regular hammer wrapped in a soft cloth to gently tap the connection between the gas rod and the chair legs. The tapping direction should be along the axial direction of the gas rod to avoid bending the gas rod due to lateral force. If the connection is tight, gradually increase the tapping force until the gas rod is loosened.
- Using Auxiliary Tools: If tapping is ineffective, try using a pipe wrench or an adjustable wrench to fix the root of the gas rod, and hold the chair legs with the other hand and rotate them in the opposite direction (suitable for threaded connections). If it is an interference fit, spray a small amount of lubricant (such as WD-40) on the connection, wait for 5-10 minutes, and then tap again.
Precautions
- Wear protective gloves before operation to avoid scratches from metal parts.
- Pay attention to the balance of parts during the separation process to prevent small parts (such as screws and snaps) from being lost.
- If there is high-pressure gas inside the gas rod, release the pressure slowly during separation to avoid sudden popping and injury.
