Self-made Seat Covers for Office Chairs

Admin October 13, 2026

You can choose the appropriate method to make self-made seat covers for office chairs based on the chair type. Here are some common methods:

I. Making Seat Covers for Upholstered Chairs

  1. Pattern Making and Measurement: Create patterns on the side of the seat. Draw a horizontal line along the lower edge of the seat. Alternatively, mark specific points and then remove the chair components and use a ruler to draw straight lines for assistance. Measure the backrest and the seat surface. If the dimensions of the backrest are the same, the measurement process can be simplified. Accurate measurement is the foundation for making well-fitting seat covers, ensuring that the seat covers fit all parts of the chair and avoiding issues of being too large or too small.
  2. Fabric Cutting: Cut out the appropriate fabric according to the measured dimensions. For upholstered chairs, it is advisable to choose soft and elastic fabric. This not only ensures the comfort of the seat cover but also allows it to better conform to the shape of the chair. When cutting, pay attention to the neatness of the edges to avoid fraying that can affect aesthetics and usability.

II. Making Seat Covers for Regular Office Chairs

  1. Fabric Preparation: Prepare a piece of fabric the same size as the chair surface as the front of the seat cover. Then prepare a long strip of fabric that can wrap around the edge of the chair surface as the width part. This method of making is relatively simple and is suitable for situations where the requirements for the seat cover are not overly complex.
  2. Sewing and Assembly: Sew the long strip of fabric to the fabric the size of the chair surface. You can use hand-sewing or a sewing machine. When sewing, pay attention to the density and uniformity of the stitches to ensure the durability of the seat cover. During the sewing process, you can add some decorative elements as needed, such as lace or bows, to enhance the aesthetics of the seat cover.

III. Making Seat Covers for Round Stools

  1. Shape Drawing and Cutting: Place the stool on the fabric and draw the shape of the stool. Then cut along the line, leaving an extra 1 centimeter outside the line. The extra 1 centimeter is for allowing room for subsequent sewing to ensure that the seat cover can fit tightly on the stool.
  2. Sewing and Decoration: Take another piece of fabric and wrap it around the stool. Sew the two pieces of fabric with their front sides facing each other. Then, take a piece of fabric and press a circle of lace around it, stitching and gathering the lace as you go to create a beautiful ruffled effect. Finally, thread an elastic band through and stretch it to a length that can fit over the stool. This completes the making of the round stool seat cover. The design of the elastic band makes it convenient to install and remove the seat cover and also helps to keep the seat cover firmly in place on the stool.
