Office Chair Self-Made Height Increase

Admin October 11, 2026

The height increase of an office chair can be achieved through the following methods. Choose the appropriate solution based on the chair type and requirements, and strictly adhere to safety regulations:

1. Add Lumbar Support and Headrest
Suitable for situations where the height of back support needs to be increased. After measuring the width of the chair back, select a detachable lumbar support (which can independently adjust the support position) and a headrest that can be adjusted up and down and front and back. Prioritize models that are fixed with punch-free buckles or straps. These accessories increase the height of the chair back through physical superposition while improving sitting comfort. However, ensure they are firmly fixed to avoid sliding and potential safety hazards.

2. Use Height-Increasing Cushions or Footstools
Directly increase the height of the seat surface or foot support. Choose a non-slip height-increasing cushion (with a thickness of 5-10cm) and place it on the chair surface, or pair it with a sturdy footstool (with a height of 15-20cm) placed under the chair. Note that the footstool should have a non-slip bottom and a load-bearing structure to prevent shifting or tipping during use.

3. Replace with Height-Increasing Chair Legs
Measure the interface size of the original chair legs (such as the diameter of the five-star base and the type of buckle) and purchase matching height-increasing accessories (usually increasing the height by 5-15cm). When installing, completely remove the old chair legs with a wrench, slowly screw in the new chair legs by aligning the buckles, and test the stability by shaking after installation. Ensure that the height error of each chair leg does not exceed 1mm to prevent the chair from tilting.

4. Replace with Larger-Sized Wheels
Indirectly increase the height of the chair by increasing the diameter of the wheels (each 1cm increase in wheel diameter approximately increases the chair height by 0.5cm). Measure the original wheel diameter (commonly 50-75mm) and wheel type (snap-ring type or threaded type), and purchase larger-sized wheels of the same type. When replacing, use pliers or a wrench to remove the old wheels, and be careful to protect the interface of the gas lift to avoid scratches.

5. Add Non-Slip Height-Increasing Components
After installing the new wheels, you can put on silicone foot covers (with a thickness of 2-5cm) or stick height-increasing pads with non-slip textures at the bottom of the chair legs. This solution is suitable for minor height adjustments. Ensure that the materials meet the load-bearing requirements (usually able to withstand a pressure of more than 100kg) and have sufficient friction with the ground.

6. Professional Modification of Wooden/Metal Chair Legs

  • Wooden Structure: Ask a carpenter to add extension legs under the chair legs. Use wooden blocks of the same material as the original chair legs (with a thickness customized according to requirements) and fix them with wood screws. Ensure that there are no gaps at the connections and the structure is stable.
  • Metal Chair Legs: Professional personnel are required to weld height-increasing sections. After welding, perform a stress test to prevent metal deformation from causing the chair to tip over. This solution has a relatively high cost and is recommended as a last resort.

Safety Precautions:

  • All height-increasing materials should pass a load-bearing test (it is recommended to choose products marked with a load-bearing capacity of โ‰ฅ120kg).
  • When modifying the gas lift, make sure it has passed safety certifications such as SGS and TรœV. Do not privately replace products without certification.
  • After modification, perform a dynamic test (such as shaking in a sitting position and sliding back and forth) to ensure there are no abnormal noises or looseness.
