Office Chair Seat Surface

Admin October 14, 2026

The design key points of an office chair seat surface cover aspects such as material, dimensions, and design features, as detailed below:

Material Aspect: The seat surfaces of ergonomic computer chairs mainly use mesh fabric and cowhide materials. Mesh fabric offers good breathability, allowing air to circulate freely between the seat surface and the body, reducing stuffiness, especially suitable for long-hour office sitting scenarios, keeping the buttocks and legs dry and comfortable. Cowhide material has a better texture, with certain durability and support, providing a relatively stable sitting experience for users.

Dimension Aspect:

  • Seat Height: In daily life, the normal seat height of a chair ranges from 400 - 450mm. The national standard GB 3326 - 1997 stipulates that the seat height H should be between 400 - 440mm, with a dimension increment of 10mm. The maximum height of a soft seat surface is 460mm (excluding seat surface depression). The seat height of a sofa is generally between 360 - 420mm. An appropriate seat height is the height from the back of the knee to the sole of the foot plus the thickness of the heel (25 - 35mm), minus an activity allowance of 10 - 20mm, i.e., seat height H = back of knee height + heel thickness - appropriate clearance. An appropriate seat height allows the feet to rest naturally on the ground with the thighs parallel to the ground, reducing leg pressure.
  • Seat Width: Generally, it can range from 400 - 500mm. The national standard GB 3326 - 1997 stipulates that the front width B of the seat of an armchair or folding chair should be greater than or equal to 380mm, with a dimension increment of 10mm; the inner width B of the front of the armrests should be greater than or equal to 460mm, with a dimension increment of 10mm. The seat width should allow the buttocks to be fully supported with some room to spare. For an armchair, the inner width of the armrests is the seat width, generally determined by adding an appropriate allowance to the average shoulder width of a person, i.e., inner width B of the front of the armrests = human shoulder width + winter clothing thickness + activity allowance.
  • Seat Depth: Seat depth refers to the distance from the front edge to the back edge of the seat surface. The national standard GB 3326 - 1997 stipulates that the seat depth T should be between 340 - 420mm for backrest chairs, or 400 - 440mm for armchairs, or 340 - 420mm for folding chairs, with a dimension increment of 10mm. For sofas and other leisure seating, due to the larger backrest inclination, the seat depth can be slightly larger, ranging from 480 - 560mm. Practice has shown that the seat depth should be slightly less than the horizontal length of the thighs in a sitting position, i.e., seat depth T = horizontal length of thighs in a sitting position - 60mm (clearance).

Design Feature Aspect: The seat surface design of ergonomic computer chairs reserves clearance for the back of the knees to avoid compression and affect blood circulation. Some ergonomic chairs use zoned sponge designs for their seat cushions, such as the Qingxian Dynamic Ergonomic Chair S1. Sitting in it, one feels securely supported, with the ability to provide differentiated support according to the stress on different parts of the body, improving sitting comfort.
