Office Chair Seat Removal

Admin October 22, 2026

Removing the seat of an office chair requires preparing tools and following standardized steps, as detailed below:

Preparing Tools

The basic toolkit should include a Phillips and flat-head screwdriver, wrenches (including socket wrenches), a rubber mallet, a staple remover, a pry bar or plastic pry tool, a cloth, and a penetrating oil for dealing with rust. For certain office chairs with specific structures, an Allen wrench or an electric drill may also be required. These tools can meet the needs of disassembling different components, such as using a screwdriver to unscrew screws and a rubber mallet to knock and loosen clips.

Disassembly Steps

  • Headrest: If the headrest is simply inserted and secured with two screws, use an appropriate screwdriver to unscrew the screws, and the headrest can be easily removed.
  • Armrests: Carefully observe the connection method of the armrests. If they are secured with screws, locate the connecting screws at the bottom or side and unscrew them counterclockwise with a screwdriver. If the screws are inside the seat frame, due to space constraints, you can unscrew them by hand.
  • Backrest: Most of the time, the back frame of the chair is fixed to the base with three screws. Use a screwdriver to directly remove these three screws, and the back frame can be taken down.
  • Separating the Base from the Gas Lift: Turn the chair upside down and use a rubber mallet to strike evenly and forcefully along the steel ring at the bottom of the base to loosen the internal clips. Then, hold the gas lift with one hand and try to pry or shake the base with the other hand. If they cannot be separated, repeat the striking. For extremely stubborn cases, you can try stepping on a part of the five-star base with your foot and grasping the seat with both hands to shake it up and down, using the principle of leverage to make it come off.

Precautions

  • Before disassembly, carefully observe the overall structure of the chair and clarify the fixing methods of each component. This will enable more targeted disassembly operations and avoid damage to components due to blind operations.
  • When operating, be gentle and cautious, avoid using brute force to prevent damage to chair components or personal injury. It is recommended to wear gloves and use a cloth to place the disassembled parts in an orderly manner to prevent loss or scratches.
  • Keep the parts properly and take photos for record before disassembly. This way, during subsequent reassembly, you can clearly know the positions and installation methods of each part to ensure smooth reassembly.
