Mold on Office Chair Seats

Admin October 10, 2026

After mold appears on office chair seats, targeted treatment measures should be taken based on the degree of mold growth, along with attention to protection and prevention.

I. Determining the Degree of Mold Growth and Treatment

  1. Mild Mold Growth
If the mold spots only appear on the surface of connecting joints, crevices, etc., and are light in color (such as grayish-white), first clean the surface dust and loose mold spots. After wiping with a damp cloth, for mold spots in the crevices, use an old toothbrush dipped in clean water to gently brush along the grain; for stubborn mold spots, sprinkle baking soda powder and use a toothpick wrapped in a damp cotton swab to pick them out. After cleaning, ensure thorough drying to prevent repeated mold growth. You can also use a mold remover (such as MEIBOSS Mold Doctor All-Purpose Mold Remover) to evenly spray the mold spots, let it sit for about 2 hours until the mold spots fade and disappear, and then spray a furniture mold inhibitor on the surface, which is suitable for mold prevention on materials such as oriented strand board and particle board.

  2. Severe Mold Growth
If the mold spots are dark in color (such as black or dark green) and feel hard and crumbly to the touch, it indicates that the mold has eroded the interior. In this case, use diluted 84 disinfectant or a professional wood disinfectant to wipe or spray the moldy areas, but strictly follow the instructions to avoid damaging the material. If the mold spots cover the entire chair, the repair cost is high and it is difficult to completely remove them. It is recommended to directly replace the chair with a new one.

II. Health Protection and Precautions

The surface of a moldy chair contains a large number of mold spores, which can be transmitted through the air. Inhaling them may cause symptoms such as skin allergies and coughing, and long-term exposure can also lead to a weakened immune system. Therefore, it is essential to wear a mask and gloves when handling the mold to avoid direct contact with it. After handling, open the windows for ventilation to reduce the indoor mold concentration.

III. Preventive Measures

  1. Check the material when purchasing: Choose to buy office chairs from regular channels and check whether the material is dry and free of mold. Avoid using low-quality boards that are prone to moisture absorption.
  2. Keep the environment dry: Regularly clean the office area and avoid humid environments (such as areas near water sources or with poor ventilation). You can use a dehumidifier or desiccant to reduce the humidity.
  3. Regular maintenance: If the chair has not been used for a long time, regularly check and clean it to prevent dust accumulation and mold growth.

By taking targeted treatment measures, strict protection, and source prevention, you can effectively solve the problem of mold on office chairs and safeguard your health.
