Office Chair Seat Height

Admin October 10, 2026

The standard range for the seat height of office chairs is typically between 400-500 millimeters (40-50 centimeters), which should be determined based on a combination of national standards and ergonomic requirements.

According to national standards, there are two main specifications for the seat height of office chairs:

  1. GB3326-1997 specifies that the seat height should be between 400-440 millimeters. However, mainstream products on the market can achieve free adjustment from 360-480 millimeters through designs such as gas springs to accommodate the needs of people of different heights.
  2. GB/T 3976-2014 further clarifies that the seat height range for adult office chairs is 400-500 millimeters (40-50 centimeters), emphasizing that this range complies with ergonomic standards and can reduce fatigue from prolonged sitting.

Seat height design must strictly adhere to ergonomic principles, with the core goal of avoiding pressure on the popliteal fossa (the back of the knee). If the seat height is too high, having your legs hang can obstruct blood circulation; if it is too low, it may compress the popliteal nerve, causing numbness or pain. Therefore, when adjusting, ensure that both feet are flat on the ground, the thighs are parallel to the ground, and the knees are bent at approximately 90 degrees.

For people of different heights, seat height adjustments should be handled differently:

  • Short individuals (155-160 cm tall): It is recommended to adjust the seat height to the lowest setting (about 360 millimeters) to avoid having the legs hang due to excessive seat height.
  • Tall individuals (over 180 cm tall): If paired with a standard 75-centimeter desk, ensure that the thighs are parallel to the ground and the elbows are bent at 90 degrees. The height difference between the desk and chair should be controlled between 28-32 centimeters. For example, if the desk height is 75 centimeters, the seat height should ideally be between 43-47 centimeters.
  • Gender differences: Men can use 43 centimeters as a reference for adjustment, while women can use 41 centimeters. At the same time, ensure that the height difference between the desk and chair is within the range of 250-320 millimeters to maintain proper sitting posture.

When making actual adjustments, the "trial sitting method" can be used to verify reasonableness: if the back naturally fits against the chair back, the arms can rest easily on the desktop without shrugging, it indicates that the seat height matches the individual's height well.
