Office Chair Seat Height Adjustment
Office chair seat height adjustment is mainly achieved through four methods: pneumatic, electric, screw, and fixed-position, each with its own characteristics and safety considerations.

Pneumatic lift chairs are the most common type in office settings. Their core principle involves using the compression and release of high-purity nitrogen (usually โฅ90% purity) within a cylinder to drive the movement of a piston rod. The height of the chair seat is adjusted by controlling the gas pressure inside the cylinder through a regulating handle. Their structure includes a cylinder, piston rod, regulating handle, and explosion-proof steel plate (thickness โฅ2mm), with some products certified by SGS, TUV, etc. Their advantages lie in low cost and flexible operation, but there is a risk associated with inferior pneumatic rods: if the pneumatic rod is of poor quality, the gas purity is insufficient, or the seal is not tight, frequent adjustments may cause gas expansion and lead to an explosion. Therefore, it is essential to choose products from reputable manufacturers and avoid excessive operation.
Electric lift chairs use electric push rods (linear actuators) as their power source, consisting of a motor, push rod, and control device, supporting remote operation and precise stroke adjustment. Their characteristic is a high degree of automation, suitable for scenarios requiring frequent height adjustments, but they are more expensive and rely on a power source, commonly found in high-end office chairs or special-need scenarios.
Screw-type lift chairs achieve height locking through the self-locking function of a screw pair, belonging to purely mechanical adjustment. Their advantage lies in a simple structure without the need for an additional power source, but they have lower adjustment precision and rely on manual operation, commonly seen in basic office chairs.
Fixed-position lift chairs connect the chair legs to the seat with screws, supporting only a few preset fixed height adjustments. Their characteristic is strong stability but poor flexibility, suitable for scenarios with few height change requirements.
Safety Usage Recommendations:
- Prioritize products from reputable manufacturers and check if the pneumatic rod is marked with a safety rating (such as Class IV) and certification logos;
- Avoid frequent adjustments of pneumatic lift chairs and regularly inspect the cylinder's seal and the integrity of the explosion-proof steel plate;
- For electric lift chairs, pay attention to power safety and avoid using them in humid environments;
- For screw-type and fixed-position lift chairs, regularly inspect the tightness of the screws to prevent loosening.
Some high-end office chairs (such as JD Jingzao Z5 Pro, Igrow V3) integrate adjustable chair backs, adaptive lumbar supports, and other designs on top of the lift function, further enhancing comfort during prolonged sitting.
