Office Chair Seat Height

Admin October 19, 2026

The appropriate seat height for an office chair typically ranges from 40 to 50 centimeters, and should be adjusted according to height, gender, and usage scenario.

According to the GB3326-1997 standard, the seat height of an office chair should be designed within the range of 400 to 440 millimeters (i.e., 40 to 44 centimeters) to ensure compliance with basic ergonomic requirements. Mainstream products on the market achieve height adjustment through pneumatic rods or mechanical structures, with a typical adjustment range of 360 to 480 millimeters (36 to 48 centimeters), catering to the needs of users with different body types.

The matching relationship between height and seat height is a core reference:

  • For a height of 160 centimeters: It is recommended to adjust the seat height to 42 to 43 centimeters. This height allows both feet to rest flat on the ground, with the thighs parallel to the ground, avoiding leg suspension due to a seat that is too low or knee pressure caused by a seat that is too high.
  • For a height of 165 centimeters: A seat height of 43 to 45 centimeters is suitable. This range helps maintain the natural alignment of the waist with the chair back, reducing fatigue from prolonged sitting, while also facilitating the natural placement of the arms on the desktop for device operation.
  • For a height of 170 centimeters: The optimal adjustment range is 45 to 47 centimeters. A higher seat height prevents forward leaning, maintains spinal neutrality, and reduces pressure on the lumbar intervertebral discs.

Gender differences should be taken into account:
Men, on average, are taller and commonly use a seat height of around 43 centimeters; women, on the other hand, should choose based on their specific height, typically using a seat height 1 to 2 centimeters lower than that of men. For example, a 165-centimeter woman may be more suitable for a seat height of 43 to 44 centimeters, rather than directly applying the male standard.

Adjustment suggestions for special scenarios:
If the office desk height is fixed (e.g., a standard desktop height of 75 centimeters), the seat height needs to be coordinated with the desk height. Ideally, when the elbows are bent at a 90-degree angle, the desktop should be level with the elbows. In this case, a 170-centimeter user with a seat height of 45 to 47 centimeters can achieve this proportion, while shorter individuals may need to lower the seat height or use a footrest for additional support.

Adjustment precautions:
When adjusting, keep both feet flat on the ground, with the knees at the same height as or slightly lower than the hips; press the back against the chair back to feel whether the lumbar support is adequate. If the chair has no lumbar support, adjust the seat height slightly to keep the back naturally straight and avoid slouching.
