Office Chair Seat Depth

Admin October 22, 2026

The reasonable range for the seat depth of an office chair is typically between 38 and 42 centimeters, with the specific choice depending on an individual's body type and usage needs.

1. Selecting the Base Depth Based on Body Type
Body type is the core factor in determining seat depth. For individuals who are shorter in height or have a slimmer build, a seat depth of 40 centimeters is more appropriate. At this depth, a gap of 2 to 3 finger widths can be maintained between the knees and the edge of the seat, which not only prevents excessive pressure on the front of the thighs but also ensures pelvic stability while sitting. If the seat is too deep, it may lead to a lack of lumbar support, resulting in poor posture such as slouching.
For those with a sturdier build or longer thighs, a depth of 42 to 45 centimeters better meets their needs. Such a depth can fully support the thighs, preventing poor blood circulation caused by the thighs hanging in the air, while also reducing friction between the buttocks and the edge of the seat. However, it is important to note that the seat depth should not exceed the length of the thighs (the distance from the buttocks to the back of the knees), otherwise the back of the knees will be pressed against the front edge of the seat, causing numbness or pain.

2. Dynamic Adjustment to Optimize Sitting Health
Seat depth is not a fixed value and can be adjusted to suit different scenarios through adjustable features. For example, shortening the seat depth until the thighs are fully supported, with a gap of 2 finger widths behind the knees, allows the pelvis to naturally tilt slightly forward when leaning back, forming an angle of about 95 degrees between the thighs and the horizontal plane. This posture helps distribute lumbar pressure, preventing lower back muscle strain caused by prolonged sitting, while also keeping the gluteal muscles relaxed and reducing fatigue.
If you need to work at a desk for long periods, you can appropriately increase the seat depth (without exceeding the length of the thighs) to bring your back closer to the backrest and use a lumbar support to maintain the natural curve of the lumbar spine. If you need to move frequently or adjust your sitting position, shorten the seat depth to enhance flexibility.

3. Special Cases and Considerations

  • Height Differences: Individuals taller than 185 centimeters may need to choose chairs with a seat depth exceeding 42 centimeters, but priority should be given to ensuring that the back of the knees is not compressed.
  • Health Issues: For those with lumbar disc herniation or sciatica, it is advisable to choose chairs with adjustable seat depth and confirm comfort through trial sitting.
  • Trial Sitting Verification: Regardless of the depth chosen, the final decision should be based on actual sitting comfort. When trying out the chair, keep your feet flat on the ground and your back against the backrest, and feel the fit between your thighs and the seat as well as the pressure on the back of your knees.
