Types of Office Chair Seat Cushions

Admin October 09, 2026

The main types of office chair seat cushions include foam cushions, mesh cushions, special fabric cushions, and latex cushions.

Foam Cushions: Scientifically known as polyurethane soft foam rubber, their manufacturing materials include polyol compounds, organic polyisocyanates, and various additives. Based on the preparation process, they can be divided into cut foam and molded foam. According to density, they can be classified into three categories: low-density (less than 18kg/mยณ), medium-density (between 18 - 45kg/mยณ), and high-density (greater than 45kg/mยณ) foam. Among them, high-density rebound foam is the most commonly used seat cushion material for office chairs in enterprises, offering high cost-effectiveness and practicality. High-quality high-density foam has uniform density, good resilience, and is not prone to collapse after prolonged sitting. It can evenly distribute the pressure on the buttocks, has moderate hardness, good breathability, is wear-resistant and durable, and does not deform easily with long-term use.

Mesh Cushions: Except for some low-end ergonomic chairs priced below 1,000 yuan in China, which occasionally use foam cushions, other products are generally equipped with mesh cushions. Mesh backrests are currently the mainstream preferred option for office chairs and are divided into two types: highly elastic and breathable mesh and thickened and wear-resistant mesh. High-quality mesh has strong toughness and sufficient elasticity, can conform to the curves of the waist and back, provide precise lumbar support, and relieve waist and back pain. The fully perforated mesh design offers excellent breathability, allowing for comfortable use throughout the year without sweating. It is also not prone to aging or cracking, is easy to clean daily, and has low maintenance costs.

Special Fabric Cushions: These cushions are relatively rare. For example, the Herman Miller Embody uses a special fabric cushion. Their specific characteristics and advantages may vary depending on the material and craftsmanship of the special fabric, usually offering unique performance in terms of comfort and breathability.

Latex Cushions: They have higher softness and can better conform to the body's curves, providing better pressure relief. They are suitable for people who work at a desk for long periods or sit for extended periods. However, pure latex material has average breathability and is relatively expensive, making it more suitable for use in the offices of managers and supervisors rather than for bulk purchases for large areas of employee workstations.
