Office Chair Seat Cushion Falls Off

Admin October 13, 2026

If the seat cushion of your office chair falls off, you can follow these steps to handle it:

I. Simple Repair Solutions

  1. Screw Fixing
If the cushion becomes loose due to a fallen screw, first try to find the original screw and use a screwdriver or wrench to screw it back into the base and tighten it. If the screw is lost, you need to purchase a replacement screw of the matching size (such as M4 or M5 specifications). If the screw cannot be fixed, you can lay the chair on its side and use pliers to clamp the bottom metal fastener tightly to enhance stability.
  2. Glue Bonding
If the base is made of plastic or metal and has a rough contact surface (sub-surface layer), you can choose a strong adhesive (such as AB glue or epoxy resin) and apply it to the contact surface between the bottom of the cushion and the base. Press for 1-2 minutes until the adhesive is initially cured, then release it and let it stand for 24 hours to ensure complete bonding.
  3. Direct Replacement
If the cushion is aged, hardened, or severely damaged, you need to purchase a new cushion of the matching model. Measure the length, width, thickness, and fixing hole spacing of the original cushion and select a product of the matching size. For some chairs, you need to remove the old cushion before installing the new one. Be sure to keep the original accessories (such as screws and buckles).

II. Standardized Replacement Process

  1. Removing the Old Cushion
    • Turn the chair over or lift the dust cover at the edge of the cushion and use a screwdriver to rotate counterclockwise to remove the hidden screws (if the screws are rusted, you can spray WD-40 lubricant to help loosen them).
    • If the cushion is fixed with buckles, use a flat tool (such as a plastic pry bar) to gently pry the edge of the buckle to avoid scratching the chair surface.
    • Keep all the removed screws, washers, and buckles and store them separately to prevent loss.
  2. Installing the New Cushion
    • Align it with the mounting holes on the chair frame. If it is fixed with screws, first manually screw the screws into the threaded holes, and then use a screwdriver to tighten them clockwise until they cannot rotate; if a wrench is needed for assistance, fix the nut part to prevent sliding.
    • Adjust the angle of the bottom bracket (if any) to ensure it matches the chair's support structure, and use a wrench to tighten the connectors until the bracket is stable without shaking.
    • Install the new part by referring to the direction of the old cushion. If there is an instruction manual, adjust the number and position of the fixing points according to the instructions.
  3. Inspection and Testing
    • Gently shake the cushion to confirm that there is no looseness or abnormal noise, and check whether all the screws are completely tightened.
    • When sitting down for testing, apply pressure evenly and observe whether the cushion sinks smoothly and whether the bottom bracket is in good contact with the ground.
    • If tilting or shaking is found, you need to remove it again and adjust the position of the fixing points.

III. Emergency and Long-term Reinforcement Solutions

  1. Temporary Fixing
If you have no tools at hand, you can use a wide cloth belt or a long rope to cross-bind the cushion and the chair frame to prevent it from falling off in the short term.
  2. Long-term Reinforcement
    • Velcro: Sew or stick the hook side on the bottom of the cushion and fix the loop side on the chair surface. Clean both surfaces and let them dry before sticking to enhance adhesion.
    • U-shaped Staple Gun: Lift the fabric of the cushion and drive stainless steel staples obliquely into the seam. The length of the staple legs should be less than the thickness of the sponge to avoid penetration.
    • Anti-slip Mat: Cut a TPU mesh mat (slightly smaller than the cushion) and place it between the chair surface and the cushion to inhibit sliding through frictional resistance.
  3. Daily Maintenance
Regularly check the condition of the fixing parts. When the adhesion of the Velcro weakens, wipe it with alcohol to restore it; fabric cushions can be removed and washed and then reinforced again; avoid exposure to the sun or humid environments that may cause material aging.
