Office Chair Seat Cushion Fabric

Admin October 12, 2026

The mainstream types of office chair seat cushion fabrics include mesh, sponge, and special fabrics, in addition to materials such as modified polypropylene fiber (ma rong) and leather. The specific choice should be based on the usage scenario and functional requirements.

Mesh is a common choice for domestic ergonomic office chairs, with core advantages including high breathability, wear resistance, and ease of maintenance. Mesh materials form a hollow structure through weaving, offering significantly better air circulation than solid materials. This effectively reduces the stuffy feeling during prolonged sitting, making it particularly suitable for humid southern climates or small offices with limited ventilation. Its high surface fiber density provides strong scratch resistance, and daily cleaning only requires wiping with a damp cloth, resulting in low maintenance costs. Additionally, the elastic modulus of mesh can be adjusted through weaving density, and some high-end products feature zone-based support designs that provide differentiated support based on the pressure distribution of the buttocks. However, local sagging may occur after long-term use.

Sponge seat cushions use polyurethane soft foam rubber as the base material, with elasticity derived from the deformation of a three-dimensional grid structure. Density is a key indicator of sponge performanceโ€”higher density means stronger elasticity and better durability. For example, high-rebound sponge with a density of over 40kg/mยณ can withstand tens of thousands of compression cycles without significant deformation, often offering better comfort than mesh. Foreign brands like Herman Miller and Okamura often use customized sponge formulas, adjusting the foaming process to control porosity and achieve a balance between support and softness. However, sponge has poor breathability, making it prone to sweat accumulation in summer, and requires perforated designs or breathable backing fabrics for improvement.

Special fabrics are mostly used in high-end product lines. For instance, Herman Miller's Embody series once adopted bionic fiber fabrics that simulate human skin texture to achieve dynamic pressure dispersion. These materials are costly and have a low market share but offer a unique tactile experience. Additionally, modified polypropylene fiber (ma rong) is commonly found in budget office chairs due to its low cost and strong aging resistance, while leather is divided into natural leather and artificial leather. The former offers good breathability but requires regular maintenance, while the latter is waterproof and easy to clean but less durable, requiring a trade-off between budget and usage frequency when choosing.
