Office Chair Seat Cushion Disassembly

Admin October 12, 2026

There are mainly two methods for disassembling the seat cushion of an office chair:

Method 1: Use gravity to make the cushion fall off
First, adjust the office chair to a reclined position so that the backrest forms a certain angle with the ground. At this time, the old cushion will have a slight tendency to drop due to gravity, and the stress distribution at the connection between the cushion and the chair body will change, facilitating subsequent disassembly. Next, use a flat-head screwdriver as a tool to locate the screws that secure the cushion. These screws are usually located at the edges or bottom of the contact surface between the cushion and the chair body and may be covered by plastic covers, which need to be pried open first. When operating, pay attention to the rotation direction of the screws (usually tighten clockwise and loosen counterclockwise), and remove the screws one by one. If the screws are rusted or stuck due to long-term use, a small amount of lubricant (such as WD-40) can be sprayed to assist in disassembly. Once all the screws are removed, the cushion can be separated from the chair body.

Method 2: Flip the chair to disassemble the base and armrests
Flip the chair over so that its bottom is facing up and place it steadily on a stool or workbench to avoid unstable operation due to the chair legs being suspended. Then, use a hex wrench (usually 4mm or 5mm in size) to unscrew the four screws that secure the base. These screws are located at the connection between the chair body and the base and may be covered by rubber pads or decorative covers, which need to be removed first. After the base is disassembled, observe the connection method between the armrests and the chair body. If the armrests are fixed with screws, use a hex wrench of the same size to unscrew the armrest screws; if the armrests are of a snap-fit design, use a flat-head screwdriver or a plastic pry bar to gently pry open the snaps. Once the base and armrests are disassembled, the cushion will lose its fixed support and can be directly removed from the chair body.

Precautions:

  1. Before disassembly, confirm the structure of the chair to avoid damaging components due to forced operation;
  2. The tools should match the screw specifications to avoid slipping or damaging the threads;
  3. It is recommended to wear gloves during disassembly to prevent scratches or pinches;
  4. If the chair has a pneumatic rod design, lock the pneumatic rod first to prevent accidental lifting or lowering.
