Methods for Making Office Chair Seat Covers

Admin October 17, 2026

The methods for making seat covers for different types of office chairs are as follows:

Methods for Making Seat Covers for Round Stools

First, place the stool on the fabric and use a marking tool to draw the shape along the edge of the stool. Cut along the drawn shape, leaving about 1 centimeter from the edge, to obtain the top fabric for the seat cover. Next, take another piece of fabric and measure the required length by wrapping it around the stool. Cut out the appropriate size as the side fabric for the seat cover. Place these two pieces of fabric with their right sides facing each other and sew their edges together using a sewing machine or by hand to form a bag-like structure. Then, prepare a piece of fabric with lace. Create pleats while sewing to give it a three-dimensional effect. Finally, thread an elastic band through, adjust its length so that it fits snugly over the stool when stretched, and sew the two ends of the elastic band together to secure it.

Methods for Making Seat Covers for Upholstered Chairs

For upholstered chairs, pattern making for the side and seat areas should be done separately. Draw a horizontal line along the lower edge of the seat area. Alternatively, you can mark the points on the chair first and then draw a straight line using a ruler after taking it off. For the backrest and the seat surface of the backrest, precise measurements are required. If the dimensions of the backrest are the same, you can cut and make them according to the same size. During the pattern-making process, pay attention to considering the curvature and three-dimensionality of the chair to ensure that the made seat cover fits the surface of the chair.

Methods for Making Seat Covers for Fabric Chairs

First, place the sponge on the back of the fabric and use an eraser or other tool to draw the outline of the sponge. When cutting the fabric, leave at least 1 centimeter for the seam allowance. If the fabric is prone to shrinkage, leave more seam allowance. Prepare a strip of fabric that is 6 centimeters wide. Leave 1 centimeter for the seam allowance and wash it. Its length should be the circumference of the seat cushion. Since the seat cushion is usually trapezoidal with a shorter back, start from the short side. Place the two pieces of fabric with their right sides facing each other and sew along the edges. At the corners, make them into arcs, and the fabric strip can be folded appropriately to fit the curvature. After sewing around, use pins to temporarily fix the other piece of fabric with its right side facing the other. Start sewing from 5 centimeters away from the short side, return the semi-circle to 5 centimeters away from the short side, and fill the sponge in the middle without leaving any gaps. Sew three folds on the unsewn short side and sew a button at an appropriate position. Then, prepare two strips of fabric that are 4 centimeters by 50 centimeters. Fold both sides in half to make two belts. Fold the two sides of the belts backward and sew them using a 1-millimeter sewing tape. Place the cushion on the chair, use pins to find the position of the sewing tape, and sew the belts from under the cushion. Finally, iron it to make the seat cover flatter.
