Removing Screws from an Office Chair
To remove screws from an office chair, first identify the chair type, prepare the corresponding tools, and follow the steps while paying attention to details.

1. Tool Preparation and Chair Type Identification
Most office chairs have their armrests, backrests, and other parts fixed with hex socket screws. Prepare a hex key (with a size matching the screws). If the chair is a folding model with rivet fixation, a small drill bit (1-2mm in diameter) may be needed to assist in disassembling the rivet heads. Additionally, lubricating oil (such as WD-40) and sealable bags (for sorting and storing parts) are commonly used tools.
2. Key Points for Screw Removal
- Regular screws: Insert the corresponding hex key into the screw head and rotate it slowly clockwise. If the screw loosens but does not come out completely, support the part with your hand to prevent it from falling.
- Rusty screws: Drip a small amount of lubricating oil into the screw gap and let it sit for 10-15 minutes to allow the oil to penetrate the rust layer, then try to remove it. If it is still stuck, lightly tap the area around the screw head with a wrench to loosen the rust through vibration.
- Misaligned screws: If there is excessive resistance during removal, check if the screw hole is aligned. Forcing rotation may cause the screw to strip. In this case, readjust the position of the part to ensure the screw is perpendicular to the hole before operating.
3. Handling Special Structures
- Rivet-fixed parts: Only deal with rivets when complete disassembly of the chair is required. Drill a hole in the center of the rivet head with a small drill bit, deep enough to penetrate the rivet cap, and then use needle-nose pliers to grip and pull out the rivet rod. This operation may damage the rivet, so evaluate its necessity in advance.
- Hidden screws: Some chairs use plastic covers to hide screws under the armrests or seat. Use a flat tool (such as a bank card) to pry open the cover and then remove the internal screws.
4. Sorting and Storing Parts
Place the removed screws and nuts in different sealable bags according to the disassembly order and label their positions with a marker (e.g., "Left armrest screws 1-3"). If screws of the same size are used in different parts, mark their lengths or purposes additionally to avoid confusion during reassembly.
5. Safety Precautions
Wear safety goggles during disassembly to prevent screws or debris from flying into your eyes. If the chair is heavy (e.g., with a pneumatic rod structure), collaborate with another person to avoid accidental tipping of parts. After disassembly, put the tools back in place and clean the work area to prevent the loss of small parts.
