Office Chair Screw Popping Out

Admin October 10, 2026

The probability of a screw popping out of an office chair is extremely low, but loose screws are a common safety hazard that requires prompt attention.

Screw Loosening and 'Ejection' Risk

Under normal circumstances, the likelihood of an office chair screw 'ejecting' at high speed due to loosening is very low. The essence of screw loosening is the loss of preload at the connection, typically caused by vibration, impact, improper installation, material embedding, or thread quality issues. Although the direct 'popping out' of a screw is rare, loosening can lead to structural instability, component misalignment, and even chair tipping, posing safety risks.

High-Risk Areas and Inspection Methods

The key connection points on an office chair are 'high-risk areas' for screw loosening, including:

  • Armrest-to-seat cushion connection: Frequent adjustment of armrest height or angle can easily lead to screw loosening.
  • Backrest-to-base/seat cushion connection: Repeated reclining or weight-bearing on the backrest may reduce the preload of the screws.
  • Base-to-seat cushion fixation: Long-term sitting pressure may gradually loosen the fixing screws.
  • Five-star base-to-wheel attachment: The impact of moving the chair can easily loosen the wheel screws.

Inspection Method: Manually use an appropriate screwdriver to turn each screw at the above locations one by one to confirm if they are tight. If a screw can be easily turned, it indicates that it has loosened.

Handling Measures

  1. Tighten directly: Upon discovering loosening, immediately use the corresponding screwdriver to tighten the screw until it cannot be turned further.
  2. Enhance fixation: If the chair still wobbles after tightening the screws, it may be due to insufficient preload caused by wear in the screw holes. In this case, fill the screw holes with wooden plugs (such as toothpicks or special wooden wedges), then screw the screws back into the wooden plugs, utilizing the expansion of the wooden plugs to increase friction.
  3. Replace screws: If the screw threads are severely worn or broken, replace them with new screws of the same specification. Prioritize stainless steel or galvanized screws, which have stronger corrosion resistance and a longer service life.

Prevention Recommendations

Regularly (every 3-6 months) inspect the tightness of the screws on the office chair, avoid violent use (such as sitting heavily or shaking forcefully), and reduce vibration sources (such as uneven floors). If the chair frequently experiences screw loosening, it may be due to design flaws or material issues, and it is recommended to contact the manufacturer for repair or replacement.
