Office Chair Scrapping
Admin October 08, 2026
The reasons for scrapping office chairs mainly include severe damage, excessively high maintenance costs, negative impacts on employees' health, functional failures, safety hazards, and non-compliance with standard ergonomic parameters, among others. Additionally, reaching the mandatory scrapping age also necessitates scrapping.

- Severe Damage: After prolonged use, office chairs may exhibit varying degrees of damage. For example, chair wheels may fall off, and pneumatic rods may lose their lifting functionality. Such damage can significantly disrupt normal office work. For instance, if an office chair's pneumatic rod loses its lifting functionality after four repairs and the cumulative maintenance costs reach 80% of its original value, continuing to use it would be costly and ineffective, warranting consideration for scrapping.
- Excessively High Maintenance Costs: Some office chairs, despite not being used for a long time, may incur excessively high maintenance costs due to the materials and manufacturing processes used. The funds spent on continued maintenance may far exceed the cost of purchasing a new office chair. From an economic perspective, it is more advisable to buy a new chair directly, leading to the scrapping of such office chairs.
- Negative Impacts on Employees' Health: Office chairs with unreasonable designs or uncomfortable materials can cause discomfort among employees during use, such as eye fatigue and neck pain. Aging office chairs that do not conform to ergonomic designs, such as those with non-adjustable seat heights and fixed backrest angles, can increase the burden on employees' lumbar and cervical spines, potentially leading to health issues like back pain and cervical spondylosis over the long term. Furthermore, damaged office chairs pose safety hazards, such as the risk of employees falling due to broken seats or chairs collapsing due to loose screws, all of which threaten employees' health and necessitate scrapping.
- Functional Failures: When key functions of office chairs, such as lifting or rotating capabilities, fail and cannot be used normally, it significantly affects office convenience and efficiency. In such cases, the office chairs have reached the scrapping condition.
- Safety Hazards: Problems with certain components of office chairs may pose risks to employees. Although the example provided refers to iron filing cabinets with rusted and perforated corners releasing heavy metal dust and causing skin allergies among employees, similar component issues in office chairs, such as exposed sharp parts, also pose safety hazards and require scrapping.
- Non-Compliance with Standard Ergonomic Parameters: If the configuration of existing office chairs does not comply with the relevant standard ergonomic parameters set by the State Administration for Market Regulation, it can affect work efficiency. In such cases, consideration should be given to scrapping and replacing them with compliant office chairs. Additionally, according to national standards, the mandatory scrapping age for office furniture, including office chairs, is 15 years. Chairs that have been used for 15 years and cannot function normally must be scrapped.
