Office Chair Sagging Repair
Admin October 09, 2026
Office chair sagging can be repaired using the following methods, depending on the cause of the sagging:

1. For sagging caused by cylinder failure If the chair's height cannot be fixed or continues to sink, it is usually due to cylinder seal failure or insufficient internal air pressure.
- Temporary fixation with a hose clamp: Slide down the plastic skirt of the chair to expose the metal cylinder; if the skirt covers the cylinder, remove it first. Wrap a hose clamp around the cylinder, wrap rubber bands or sand the cylinder surface to increase friction, then tighten the clamp and adjust to the appropriate height. This method is suitable for emergency repairs, but long-term use may result in height changes due to clamp loosening.
- Reinforcement with PVC pipe: Measure the diameter and length of the cylinder, select a PVC pipe with the same or slightly larger diameter, cut it lengthwise, and slide it over the cylinder. The rigidity of the pipe restricts the cylinder's expansion and contraction, preventing the chair from slipping. This method is low-cost and simple to operate, but ensure the pipe fits tightly against the cylinder.
2. For sagging caused by structural looseness If the chair wobbles or sags locally, it is often due to loose screws or worn connection parts.
- Tighten screws: Use a screwdriver or wrench to check the screws on the chair legs, armrests, backrest, etc., and tighten them one by one. Pay special attention to the connections between the cylinder and the base, and between the chair legs and the cross-braces, as these areas are subject to significant stress and are prone to loosening from long-term use.
- Repair worn screw holes or mortise-and-tenon joints: If the chair still wobbles after tightening the screws, it indicates that the holes or joints are worn. For screw holes, insert a toothpick or thin wooden stick dipped in white glue into the hole, break off the excess, and let it dry before reinserting the screw. For mortise-and-tenon joints, clean off the old glue, apply new white glue, tap the tenon back into place, and secure it with a rope or clamp until the glue is completely dry, then remove the fixture.
3. For sagging caused by insufficient overall strength If the chair's structure is deformed due to design flaws or long-term weight-bearing, it is necessary to enhance stability by reinforcing the connection parts.
- Install corner brackets: Install flat corner brackets at the connections between the chair legs and cross-braces, and between the backrest and seat surface, and secure them with screws. Corner brackets can distribute stress and reduce local pressure, especially suitable for wooden or metal-framed chairs.
Precautions:
- Before repairing, identify the cause of the sagging to avoid็ฒ็ฎ (blindly) operating and causing secondary damage.
- If the cylinder is severely damaged internally (e.g., leaking air or broken), it is recommended to replace it with a new cylinder rather than temporarily reinforcing it.
- Wear gloves during operation to prevent metal parts from scratching the skin.
