Office Chair Safety

Admin October 19, 2026

Office chair safety involves multiple aspects such as structural design, component quality, testing and certification, and usage details, with a particular focus on stability risks and purchase verification.

1. Common Safety Hazards and Accident Cases

Office chair safety issues often stem from structural failure and component defects. For example, backrest breakage and bolt failure are typical faults that can directly cause users to fall and get injured. In March 2023, the United States and Canada recalled office chairs made in China due to the risk of backrest breakage. They had received 12 reports, with 10 people injured. In January 2025, the United States recalled WorkPro Momentum office chairs because the bolts might fail, posing a risk of falling. There were 7 reports, with 2 people suffering minor injuries. Additionally, in 2024, the State Administration for Market Regulation found during spot checks that 15 batches of products failed to meet stability requirements, highlighting the prevalence of such risks.

2. Core Factors Affecting Safety Performance

  1. Material and Strength: High-quality materials (such as high-strength metals and aging-resistant plastics) are the foundation, directly affecting the chair's load-bearing capacity and durability. Low-quality materials are prone to breakage due to long-term use or external impact.
  2. Durability Testing: Rigorous testing that simulates frequent usage scenarios (such as lifting, reclining, and rotating) can verify the lifespan of components. For example, gas cylinders need to withstand tens of thousands of pressure cycle tests, and the chassis needs to pass dynamic load-bearing experiments.
  3. Certification Standards: Products that have passed international or domestic safety certifications (such as BIFMA and GB/T standards) must meet requirements for structural strength and chemical environmental protection, making their safety performance more reliable.

3. Key Verification Details When Purchasing

  1. Load-Bearing Structure:
    • Gas Cylinder: Choose explosion-proof gas cylinders with certifications from SGS, TUV, etc. Avoid low-priced products that may pose an explosion risk due to unstable gas pressure or seal failure.
    • Chassis and Chair Legs: Confirm the chassis thickness (recommended to be โ‰ฅ3mm) and the material of the chair legs (such as nylon reinforced with glass fibers or metal). A five-pronged design is more stable than a three-pronged one.
  2. Moving Parts:
    • Armrests: There should be no jamming during adjustment, and the connection points need to have reinforced designs (such as metal inserts).
    • Reclining Mechanism: Test whether the locking function is reliable to avoid sudden rebound or loosening.
    • Lifting Structure: Check if the lifting is smooth and whether the stroke of the gas cylinder meets the specified value.

4. Usage and Maintenance Recommendations

Regularly check the tightness of bolts, the seal of the gas cylinder, and the wear of the wheels. Avoid overloading the chair (usually the maximum load capacity is 100-130kg). If the chair makes abnormal noises, wobbles, or has adjustment failures, stop using it immediately and contact after-sales service.
