Rust Removal and Refinishing of Office Chairs

Admin October 22, 2026

The refinishing of rusty office chairs can be carried out according to the following steps, selecting appropriate methods based on the degree of rust and strictly adhering to operational standards:

I. Thorough Removal of Stubborn Rust

  1. Mild Rust Treatment

    • White Vinegar/Lemon Juice Method: Soak the rusty area in white vinegar for several hours, or wrap the rust with a vinegar-soaked cloth. Once the rust layer softens, scrub it with a stiff brush or an old toothbrush. Lemon juice can be used as an alternative to white vinegar, as its acidic components can also dissolve rust.
    • Baking Soda Method: Mix baking soda with water to form a thick paste, apply it evenly to the rusty surface, and let it sit until it dries and hardens. Then, scrub it with a brush. This method is environmentally friendly and non-corrosive, suitable for small rust spots.
  2. Moderate to Severe Rust Treatment

    • Manual Sanding: Use 80-grit sandpaper to initially remove the rust layer and loose old paint, gradually switching to 240-grit sandpaper to sand down to the bare metal. Sand in the direction of the metal grain to avoid scratching the surface.
    • Wire Brush Assistance: For hard-to-reach areas or loose rust, use a wire brush for initial cleaning to ensure complete removal of rust.
    • Cleaning and Drying: After sanding, thoroughly wipe away metal dust and residue with a slightly damp cloth and ensure the surface is completely dry to prevent secondary rusting caused by residual moisture.

II. Spraying Rust-Preventive Primer and Topcoat

  1. Selection of Rust-Preventive Primer

    • Epoxy Zinc-Rich Primer: Offers the best protective performance but requires thorough rust removal (up to Sa2.5 standard) and must be covered with a topcoat within 4 hours, suitable for professional settings.
    • Alkyd/Red Iron Oxide Rust-Preventive Paint: Lower cost, easy to apply, and has good adhesion, suitable for DIY projects at home.
    • Water-Based Rust-Preventive Primer: Environmentally friendly, non-toxic, and odorless, diluted with water, suitable for indoor use or areas with poor ventilation.
  2. Spraying Operation Steps

    • Preparation: Choose an open and well-ventilated area, clean the sanded chair with a cloth, and wrap non-metal parts (such as cushions) to prevent contamination.
    • Spraying Primer: Stir evenly, and if using an aerosol can, shake it for 2 minutes. Hold the nozzle about 15 centimeters from the surface and move it evenly to ensure thin, even coverage. Proceed to the next step after complete drying (usually several hours).
    • Spraying Topcoat: After the primer is completely dry, spray the selected color topcoat or aerosol paint, following the principle of "shake well, keep distance, move evenly" to ensure a uniform coating.

Additionally, specialized products like Diquemei Rust-Preventive King can simplify the process. Follow the instructions for quick refinishing. Throughout the process, pay attention to safety precautions to avoid inhaling paint fumes or contact with skin.
